I'm making a computer out of spare parts that I'll be using as a server. It'll be hosting 4x 42-slot CSS zombiemod servers with other very demanding plugins. The hardware I have atm is; Intel Q6600 G.Skill 2x2GB 800MHz Corsair 1x2GB 1333MHz Infinitive ammounts of 80GB IDE HDD Corsair 400W I need to purchase a motherboard and probably more ram, but will the Q6600 be enough to handle 168 players or should I get something like an i5-2500k?
Even if a Q6600 could handle it which I don't think it can, it wouldn't be worth it anyways. If you're going to have to purchase a new mobo and more ram then you should just go all the way and move to a 2500K. Investing any money in LGA 775 is a waste.
A Q6600 can handle a large source server on one core just fine. If you have one server on each core, then things will probably run just fine. Q6600s were such good overclockers too, you could bump the CPU up to 3 GHz and get more performance out of it. The only issue I see is that you may not have enough RAM. Source servers loaded with plugins tend to suck RAM.
4GB ram is more than enough for 4 servers

If he already had all the parts and was asking whether it would work would be a different story. I don't think buying into LGA 775 at this point is a good idea.
The only reason I'm keeping the LGA775 as an option is because I'm on a tight budget, and $120 instead of $400 would be nice. I can OC it, and I have a huge zalman cooler that I can use to keep it cool. My current idea was;
Corsair Value Select PC2-6400 2 x 2 GB G.Skill PC2-6400 2x2 GB ASRock P5B-DE LGA775 Samsung 2x80GB IDE (1 for 2 server) Samsung 1x500GB SATA (OS + backup of servers) Intel Q6600 @ 3,0GHz Asus 7600GT (I have nothing smaller) Corsair 400w
Which would be runing 1x 42-slot CSS:ZM server on each core. Windows Server 2008 RS2 would be running in the background. I also have parts for an i3-530 laying around, but I'm not sure if it'd be better as I have many processes running.
