I have a question, i'm thinking of hooking my ps3 upto a moniter and HIFI instead of a tv
here's my current plan(whats i can afford to do):
[===]cable/they are on the same adapter
[-]Connection
[b]VIDEO[/b]
HDMI(Female[ps3])-HDMI(male)===DVI~A(F)-DVI~D(M)===VGA(F)-VGA(m)===VGA(m)-VGA(F)[moniter]
[b]AUDIO[/b]
AV out[ps3]-AV in(hi-fi)
My main concern is the video, it's more complex, my question is, Will it work??
I'll make a diagram to make it easier on the eye

I put the DVI's The Wrong way around the DVI-D should be on the left, DVI-A on the right
If that won't work, can someone suggest a simple way to hook one up to a VGA moniter
If I understand correctly it won't work, HDMI is Digital, while VGA is Analog. No number of converters/add-ons will allow it to work.

If you don't want to use the audio signal from the HD cable you might was well ignore the 2 coax cables.
where can i find that cable that you have a picture of???
It will work if you do it right.
This is my setup, i'm using a DVI screen.

But there is other ways around it, in your case, you'll either need a HDMI to VGA, or a HDMI to DVI and a DVI to VGA.
but i don't have a DVI screen, I have a VGA screen
Read what i said under the image.

I'd use that, But my Screen doesn't support HD.
Edit:
It doesn't work unless your screen is 720p^
My screen is at 1680 x 1050, i run in 720p.
(Snip)
the resolution isnt' important, but do not let the PS3 try to automatically find the right resolution at startup, as it tries to use 1080p on my screen even though it's not supported.

Also that's not Scart but RGB.
Scart

But nice setup, mate.
Start the PS3 by holding the power button until you hear another beep, say yes when it asks if you want to use the HDMI for picture and sound (you'll change the sound settings later) then say no when it wants to autoadjust.
This works for me.

When I do that, The screen is just plain black D:
Wait, how is your PS3 connected to your screen?
HDMI to DVI > Screen
Well, when you turn it on by holding the button for 5 secs, nothing appears at all?
My setup's pretty nice, saves for having tons of cables running out of the PS3.

Perfect monitor for the job, if a little big.
To OP, it's spelled "monitor" not moniter.
In fp you gotta spell good if you want to be taken seriously. :eng101:

Don't you mean Stereo RCA?

are your left and right speakers really right next to each other like that?
and then right next to the sub?

all you need to do is get an HDMI-to-DVI cable (instead of an HDMI-to-DVI adapter/converter as most of those happen to not be HDCP compatible, meaning blu-ray won't work), and a DVI-to-VGA adapter like those included with every graphics card for the last 5 years, or a DVI-to-VGA cable. then connect the RCA multi-A/V Out included with the PS3 to your speakers. and you're done. if you want surround sound, you'll have to have either a receiver/mixer/amp or sound card that takes optical audio input
To do vga with a ps3(or anything else that doesnt support vga) You need a vga box, which I hear are really worth it.
it's more the hdmi part i'm worried about going from dvi-d to dvi-a which I assume is digital to anologue... and i only want l/r audio... so that should do...
why are you worried? you can set the PS3 to use the HDMI port for just video and the multi-AV port for just audio
[editline]06:37PM[/editline]
and, yes, VGA is an analog port from square one, so there's no way of getting around that.
but won't I need something to convert hdmi's digital into VGA's analog?? or am I just being a tard?
yes, you will. what is this mystical object? simply a cable or adapter.
I'm sort of skeptical as to if a DVI to VGA adapter would work in this case. A DVI to VGA adapter relies on the fact that the video card can output analog VGA over DVI, no converting of the signal is involved, since its impossible to do with just a cable adapter. All it does is connect the analog pins on the DVI port to the VGA one. HDMI is 100% digital, so there is no analog signal being output, unlike regular DVI. So I've got this feeling that it wouldn't work.
It wouldn't work, the hdmi cable connects to the digital pin outs on the hdmi to dvi adapter, the vga pins are left unused.
Just use the Component-out (RGB + Stereo RCA) cable, with a Component-to-VGA cable or adapter. Easy as 3.14

Without something to actually convert the digital video feed to VGA, there's no way to get output from an HDMI port into a VGA monitor. HDMI-DVI and then DVI-VGA won't help because unlike on a PC DVI port with a DVI-VGA converter, the analogue pins won't have anything going to them.
Seems a lot of people in this thread don't realise DVI actually carries two signals - the equivalents of both HDMI video and VGA, and obviously if you have an HDMI to DVI converter, the resulting DVI port will only supply a digital feed.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but component video on a monitor will probably look terrible. Depending on the size and the distance you plan on sitting from it of course.
