In a match, if you have a mega stone ring, [B]and[/B] the pokemon is holding the proper stone, you can mega evolve it in a match. It gets a stat boost and an appearance change. (edit)[I]Some even change abilities and types[/I].
However, you are limited to [B]only one[/B] mega evolution per battle, so it's something you have to use strategically. It's actually a good addition to the battles.

You forgot to mention that abilities and types can change too depending on the Mega Evolution, which is the most significant part of them.
I thought Mega Evolutions were a new phenomenon and wouldn't have existed during Ruby/Sapphire, [I]and[/I] only happened in the Kalos region?

Yellow, Crystal, and Emerald are enhanced remakes. So are FireRed/LeafGreen, and HeartGold/SoulSilver. Black2/White2 are sequels.
