For the first time in our lives, me and my brother both have good gaming PCs. I'm looking for a good game to play together, and there are plenty of good coop shooters, MMOs, and such available, but there's a catch; we have varying tastes, and we need something that we both can get into.
PREFARANCE: I love persistent characters, looting, and experience gain, while my brother has zero tolerance for grinding and prefers a level playing field. As for genre, he prefers shooters and I prefer RPGs, but we can both enjoy either, and we both love action adventuring.
POWAH: One of our computer's is as powerful as can be, but the other is merely average; for a frame of reference, it can run Orange Box games perfectly, Oblivion fairly well, and anything past that barely at all. It does pretty well with most MMOs and such, I can get Guild Wars running at maximum settings.
MONAY: Free to play preferred, almost certainly required. Yes, I realize this makes things quite a bit harder, but we aren't both going to put money into a game we may or may not enjoy.
So, most speedy and reliable of FP forums, what can we play together?
Borderlands might give you two some good fun. It's even on sale right now on Steam.
I guess you could play Terraria? It's the only cooperative rpg I know of. You've probably heard of it however.

Try Minecraft. It doesn't have "persistent characters", or "experience" (though that's coming soon and is already available with mods), but it has level combat (you take as much damage as your opponents), quite a few things that help with RP (crafting, mining for minerals, etc.), and a popular - though difficult - play-style is the "nomadic" one, which should fit your action-adventure criteria.
Man, you bro sounds pretty cool, by the way. Mine just grunts and beats me savagely.
If you're looking for a F2P game, you could try Spiral Knights. It's pretty neat but it may suit your interests better than your brother's.
Alright, lets run through what's been suggested so far. They're all good picks, but...
Borderlands: We've done everything there is to do in the game, twice, on Xbox splitscreen. Perfect suggestion for us, though, if we hadn't already played it
Terraria: I like it and have pretty much played it to death already; he isn't a fan
Minecraft: Minecraft is great, I own two copies and we already play it together on occasion, but it isn't quite the actiongameygame that we're looking for
Spiral Knights: See Terraria, I might be able to get him into it if I try really hard
Thanks for the suggestions so far guys, any more?
Swat 4, RBS:V2
SWAT 4 is a great game. Me and some friends would just get on ventrilo and play that all night.
Killing Floor, although I'm not sure how optimized it is on weaker systems.
Killing Floor gets really boring.
Or is that just me...?

Just you
Guh, Borderlands is only 5 BUCKS this weekend, I would love to get two copies of that, but I don't have access to a credit card this week. Bad luck. Hmm, it's a longshot, but does anybody want to give me two copies for some TF2 items or something? I've kinda got a ton of them, I still play TF2 but I'd rather get Borderlands while I can.
Bulletstorm?:v:
if you can handle a tactical shooter try swat 4, it's old so it's fairly cheap
there's some character customization in the form of equipment and weapons, and headgear in the stechkov syndicate expansion
Now if only Deus Ex Human Revolution had coop mode, it'd be exactly what you are looking for

I know, we're both addicted to it. I'll try SWAT 4 for sure, Borderlands is an even better option though... I just wish it was on sale when I actually had access to my credit card, I'd gladly buy two copies for ten bucks; forty is a bit much. I have expenses, godammit! Anyway, thanks for your suggestions so far. I'm also going to try my very, very best to get him into TF2, though its the one competitive shooter he just can't stand so far... We'll see.
UPDATE! I obtained two copies of Borderlands GOTY using only TF2 items, so that should do for now; I will also look into SWAT 4. So we're covered on shooters, anybody have any RPGish suggestions?
