Wait, are they saying Hyrule Warriors or Zelda U is going to have multiplayer? Because I already assumed HW was going to have 2P co-op or something. Wasn't it obvious?
wow that article is incredibly vague.

The insinuation is that there may be a mp for the next main title in the series as well
How the fuck could multiplayer possibly work with Zelda, especially if they're making it more open world than ever? This is upsetting because I was really hoping for a big Wii-U title that doesn't rely heavily on local multiplayer.
Multiplayer in a big open Zelda game? That could be pretty cool if they pull it off right, exploring a massive Hyrule together. I wonder if it'll be couch-style co-op or more of a Dark Souls kind of crossing into other people's worlds for either phantom invasions or jolly co-operation? I can't imagine that a run-of-the-mill free-for-all deathmatch brawl would be the right way to do Zelda multiplayer, outside of maybe Hyrule Warriors.

A second player could take control of the robot making for some simple coop. I believe you could finish without a second player but having an extra set of guns was very nice. I imagine that something like this would work out as Link usually has some little companion.
So maybe have some sort of fairy companion that you can let a friend control? That's how the Jet Force Gemini robot concept might be able to work in Zelda, and probably have the fairy controlled by touchpad when it's just the one player.

If I can have some cool online co-op experiences on top of fun local stuff like SSB and Warioware, I may actually drop the idea of getting a proper PC and pick up a WiiU instead.

If Nintendo wanted to include coop in one of their SP games, I doubt they would make it a spotlight feature. Having a controllable fairy companion is very discrete compared to adding a second Link.
That would be pretty great, but the thing is with most story-driven games is that it's kind of a thing best experienced solo with most titles. After all having a friend talk over the movie kinda ruins the mood, although it can also make for some interesting emergent discourse, like if the two of you wonder what the meaning of something is, or if Crendor accidentally fails the mission with Jesse by killing Hitler and blowing their cover. That said, if Nintendo can figure out how to make a story-rich experience with fun co-op woven seamlessly into it, more power to them. Maybe having murals in the world that are open to interpretation, where a second opinion can help with working out the secrets behind it, that could be pretty neat. However, I dunno if it would be a good idea to have "co-op required missions" unless they are optional side-dungeons that don't need to be touched unless you're going for 100% or want whatever fancy optional loot they stick at the end. Also co-operative side-dungeons would need to be designed with co-op in mind, and done in a way that doesn't cause too much frustration or potential "Damnit Crendor!" moments.
Midna/Link coop action. Firts thing that comes to mind when people discuss coop/multiplayer in Zelda.
Something like the Tingle Tuner would be nice. Had a lot of fun with that as a kid with my brother.
