Hello,
Im searching for a new hard drive as my current one is getting pretty filled up. Three questions.
1.)I built the current computer I'm writing on atm, but I cant quite remember the hard drive installation, how should I go on with adding a additonal hard drive?
2.) Can any of you reccomend a good harddrive? I prefer WesternDigital, but scream out if you know any other good respected brands. It has to be a 1TB drive, and kind of cheap and not too noisy. It will be used for storing files, so it doesen't have to be super fast.
3. What is the advantage of two platters? Should I definatly go for two, or is one just fine?
Thanks, your responses are welcome.
The best 1TB HDD is the Samsung Spinpoint F3.
As for installing a HDD, its probably the easiest part, you just screw it into the caddy, then plug in a SATA cable (thin wide ones, normally red) and a SATA power cable, Then the SATA cable goes to the motherboard SATA ports, normally located on the far right.
If i'd have to recommend a drive from WD it would be thisone :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533&cm_re=Wester_Digital_1tb-_-22-136-533-_-Product
The installation is easy, just pop the drive into the bay, connect the SATA cable, Connect the power cable and boot the PC (Don't forget to format it in Windows).

The samsung spinpoint F3 is the fastest non ssd harddrive
I remember rumors about a shitty harddrive, they humoursly called it Deathstar or something, i can't remember if it was made by Samsung or hitachi. Is samsung a good brand for hard drives?
I don't really need a that fast drive, the priority is ; Quiet, and cheap.
Samsung make the best along with WD
Its Hitachi you are thinking of
deathstar = hitachi deskstar
deathstar = hitachi deskstar
Never again :suicide:
Edit:
To clarify I had a raid 5 array and the whole array managed to somehow go down.

So The spinpoint f3 is the fastest non SCSI platter based magnetic storage option!
This. Or the Samsung.

Use the code for another $10 off. Code:EMCYSZR26
The F3 however is much cheaper with its promo code.

$20 off with this code:EMCYSZW23
I would get the Samsung.

Well I don't think so they used to have magnetic ram.

Is magnetic RAM platter based? I think not!
But I did forget about Magnetic RAM, even though I thought it was more prototypical than outdated.

No they used to use it but it might have been slower than are hard drives are now. Then are kinda trying to start using it again because it stores the data even when the power is off.

So basically hibernate instantly and restore instantly.
So basically hibernate instantly and restore instantly.
Actually boot up instantly because it never has to clear the ram. :buddy.

Yes, but shutdown would still clear ram, because windows at least sends a purge signal just before total shutdown. we'd need new software! :buddy:

Yeah it would have to have an os built around it.
Okay, the hard drive is ordered (I went for the Samsung Spinpoint F3). After plugging it in, do I have to do something for it to show up? And how do I format it, and what format should it be in? NTFS?
Also, is a SATA cable normally included with the hard drive?
NTFS?
Yes.

Go with WD. I have never had a drive from them break and they are very quite.
Too late bro
But a'm I screwed? I got no extra SATA cable, have noone of you got a cable with the harddrive? I really don't want to order a cable with shipping costs and stuff...

Unless its a pre-build, your mother board will usually come with as many SATA cables as you have ports.
I'm all out of SATA cables, just checked the motherboard package. I have a SATA cable going from my mobo to my DVD-rom, could I swap this for a IDE cable without any big loss in speed?
Edit; just found out my DVD-rom didnt have any IDE slots, hrpmf.
velociraptor is faster :D
Nope.
