title. should i be worried? [editline]24th April 2011[/editline] 40C idle. stock heatsink. (User was banned for this post ("Tech Support thread (wrong section, moved)" - SteveUK))
Did you seat the cooler properly?
Did you seat the cooler properly?
how can i tell?
how can i tell?
Open up your computer, and use those things called eyes. Unless you're blind, that is. (User was banned for this post ("Smartass reply" - Craptasket))
yes you should if you're using the stock cooler make sure all the pushpins are in properly if you're using another cooler make sure that's installed properly and that you used the correct amount of thermal paste (about the size of a grain of rice)
If you can wiggle the heatsink, it's not seated properly.
one of the pins is loose [editline]24th April 2011[/editline] but the heatsink is pretty secure
The heatsink design is horrendous, I must've spent 20 minutes trying to seat the damn thing and convince myself it was actually in place. 100 degrees is bad, mine plateaus at 70 degrees when running prime95. You might want to reapply thermal paste and reseat the heatsink

there it seems secure-ish now. i'm planning on getting a new heatsink within the next week, will it be fine till then?
What are the temps now? I was getting about 90 degrees overclocked i5-2500k to 4,5 ghz on a stock cooler. Bought a Hyper 212+ and not getting above 60 degrees on load.
If you think that's bad, try seating an AM3 cooler and not getting thermal paste everywhere.
What are you talking about? Intels heatsink designs are worse than AM3 coolers. It may be horribly annoying to snap on, but trust me, pushpins are even more painful.
Open up your computer, and use those things called eyes. Unless you're blind, that is.
Why was this rated dumb??

You never really know whether it's seated properly with those pushpins. Most aftermarket coolers use backplates. Works much better.
40C
40C
Idle or load?
Weird, took me 30 seconds, and I've never seated one of the pushpin things before.
I probably had it correct first time, but the design doesn't really give you feedback on whether its in place properly. No 'click', and it's not like a traditional screw where you just tighten it until it feels tight. So I spent some time just trying to make sure I did it right, especially seeing as I was playing with a $400 processor.
Idle or load?
idle
If you think that's bad, try seating an AM3 cooler and not getting thermal paste everywhere.
If it's the same as the AM2 heatsink then I have no trouble with those. It makes itself quite clear when it's in place properly.
If it's the same as the AM2 heatsink then I have no trouble with those. It makes itself quite clear when it's in place properly.
He is using a stock Intel Heatsink, which doesn't compare to the AM2's Heatsink.
If you think that's bad, try seating an AM3 cooler and not getting thermal paste everywhere.
This. I almost made a hole in the motherboard and wrecked half of it while trying to install a fucking heatsink on my Phenom II X4 955.
This. I almost made a hole in the motherboard and wrecked half of it while trying to install a fucking heatsink on my Phenom II X4 955.
The stock HSF for the 955 has a terrible, terrible catch, it doesn't hold steady when you try and pull it over, instead of just bends, I only noticed how bad it was after helping a friend with his AM3 Ahtlon II HSF (I forgo the model). I used to own a AM2 Athlon II 64 x2 4000+, and the HSF on that was piss easy to mount, I just assumed that by the time the 955 had come out all AMD stock heatsinks where like that to save money or something.
idle
then put it under load because idle temps mean very little
then put it under load because idle temps mean very little
seems to not go over 88C now. still prettyyyy high.
seems to not go over 88C now. still prettyyyy high.
You should probably just get an aftermarket HSF, that doesn't use pushpins.
i plan to next weekish, as soon as i get that 30$ refund from newegg into my bank account. will it be fine like this for 2 weeks?
avoid high load until you get it
Avoid high loads, you should probably underclock it too, just to be safe. after that, get something not too expensive like an Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 PRO (has to be the Pro because the normal one uses push pins), a friend of mine owns one and despite cooling a much more modest E5500 @ 3.6, it never goes past 55 Load in a 25C ambient room, so it should cool that fine too

My heatsink for my sandy bridge socket was a mother fucker to fit. Clips just didn't work!
