Ow, my childhood.
Oh wow. This is pretty, uh, huge. Carmack's brilliant mind was my main interest in ID Software as well, so I guess there goes that.
id Software is one of the main developers that manufactured my love for video games as a child. They are responsible for my love for PC gaming. This is a pretty large blow, and it could mean disaster for id as a company, but I hope John does well in future endeavors.
But he expressed interest a while back in doing a future Quake with a setting and creatures in the vein of Quake 1. What's gonna happen to that if he isn't there? :(
How advanced do you think gaming would be if Carmack was never born? It would take so much longer for 3d graphics to become a thing.

Showing interest to work on something like that was the most he could do, everything else was up to the rest of id Software.
Snip - I'm not making sense [editline]23rd November 2013[/editline] But I think it's a shame, id are one of the few devs I truly like and I find it a shame he left. Although, I thank him for everything he did for the fps genre and all that, shame about the state it's in now.
Here's hoping his current and future contributions to Occulus VR are anywhere near as major as they were to Id Software.
Part of me is happy about this since Id doesn't seem to be going anywhere and we'll get to see his talent get put to more noticeable use.
John Carmack is one of my idols, and id Software of old one of my favorite companies. This is a true shame, since it means that literally nobody who founded id works there anymore. My hopes for Doom 4 have dropped quite significantly. I do admire Carmack for always following what he's wanted to do, even if it means we won't see him working on game engines anymore. On a related note, I actually liked Rage, but I wasn't expecting Fallout like most people seemed to.
Doom 4
oh right I forgot about that are they still doing that
oh right I forgot about that are they still doing that
They were.

I think it's good. Now John can get back to actually doing something instead of being dragged down by an obviously extremely lazy bunch of pre-school drop-outs.
So is he working full time on Oculus now, or are there other things he's doing now he's left iD? Wouldn't surprise me if he helped start a new game company to develop a spiritual successor to Quake 1; seems to be what some devs are doing nowadays, like how some of the original Infinity Ward guys are working on Titanfall.

He have shown quite interest in Armadillo Aerospace and Oculus Rift. But nothing else really. He is a tech guy, so this kind of fit him better. But lets see, he properly still have some interest, games related.
It's not like id has done anyting worth mentioning these past 14 years. I think it's good.
I kinda agree. I haven't seen any good games from id for a long time now. All they had was a good engine.
They were.
They still are it's been put back to the drawing board quite recently I think.
They still are it's been put back to the drawing board quite recently I think.
Imagine how awesome it would be if there actually was a fast-paced old-school-style AAA shooter with next gen graphics.
Imagine how awesome it would be if there actually was a fast-paced old-school-style AAA shooter with next gen graphics.
Well, there's Interceptor's Rise of the Triad, but it's sort of a mixed bag, some people love it, some people hate it And it's... quite unoptimized, even with the latest patches
oh right I forgot about that are they still doing that
It's a train wreck.
Imagine how awesome it would be if there actually was a fast-paced old-school-style AAA shooter with next gen graphics.
People have been trying this ever since the "old school" days. but no one buys it and so they spend years afterwards scraping by before they either crash or go mobile.
