I'm trying to uninstall Ubuntu, so i delete the partition its in. however, i now cant load my windows partition because GRUB comes up with:
error: unknown filesystem
grub rescue>
how can i load my Windows partition and/or remove GRUB?
What version of windows is it?
If it's Vista/win7 start up from the cd and choose recovery mode. From there choose to repair start up errors. It'll replace the Linux bootloader with the windows 7 one.

okay, thanks a lot :)
okay, i still need help. firts of all its vista (urgh) and i need help with my partitions. using the disk's repair function didnt help. i probably need to reinstall windows, but i am worried that it wont help and grub will still be the default loader. how can i be sure that grub isnt the loader and it uses the windows loader from now on?
also, looking at my partitions, i have three:
the biggest, that is 124.4GB/160GB [my windows partition]
the virtual 'D:\' drive, a 10GB partition
and a mystery 4.5GB partition, that is completely full and is listed as logical. what is that partition?
Follow the steps from the link which cdlink posted. All you need to do is boot up into your install CD and go to the command prompt to fix the MBR.
I'm almost positive the steps are the same for Vista.
Why do you want to get rid of Linux? Don't want to learn how to use a computer?

Not from what I've read, he wants his windows bootloader back.

Once the bootloader has been overwritten it will stay overwritten until you modify it again (if ever).
You shouldn't have to do anything related to partitions, just follow the steps I posted, and restart your PC.
As for the 4.5GB partition... Are you using a prebuilt PC? If so that's likely the factory reset partition.

He clearly stated in the OP that he was uninstalling Ubuntu when this happened...

Oh, sorry I read in another post someone said he wanted windows back and suggested putting in the Windows DVD to replace Linux bootloader. My bad its early here.

Yes that was my post. He said in his original post that he was trying to uninstall Ubuntu and the boot loader (GRUB) is still intact but refusing to boot because it can't find Ubuntu.
Because of this he wants to restore his windows boot loader so he can access his Windows partition. What his intentions beyond that are, is unknown to me.

It's not for everyone. You should respect that.
The Rescatux distro can repair grub, once you fix your Windows MBR.
Grub's configuration is stored in the configuration files on the liunx install you deleted. Just so you understand what you did so it won't happen again.
