All source-engine based games crash after "Preparing to Launch"

Okay, so I have a laptop running Windows XP Media Center Edition, and for all SOURCE engine based games, they crash to desktop after the "Preparing to Launch" screen. A special exception is Portal, where it'll go to a black screen before crashing.
There is no error message when it crashes. It's as if I quit the game.
I've tried everything: Verifying my game caches, defragging, deleting ClientRegistry.blob, and reinstalling.
I'm completely stumped. I've found no solution to my problem in days of searching on Google.
Oh, and the games worked just find a few months ago. I think an update broke it. I dunno.
Help is appreciated.

I've even tried Steam Support - they say to delete everything except Steam.exe and Steamapps, but that does not work.
Do other games work? Try reinstalling directx and updating video drivers.

Other games do work, (like BF2142, Red Alert 2, BF2, etc.)
I've updated my DirectX and video drivers.
Try running them in windowed mode by rightclicking on them in steam, going into their startup options, and typing this: -dxlevel 70 -windowed

I'll try that. Will edit post saying if it did or didn't work.
