My friend's laptop recently broke down and his HDD has gotten corrupted. He has a lot of things on there that are irreplaceable and he doesn't have other copies of, such as pictures of his now-deceased grand father. Is there anything he can do to get even some of his data and files back?
I'm not sure if it matters, but the laptop is a Macbook pro.
And this is precisely why you never store important data in just one place. If your data doesn't exist in at least 3 places, just act like it doesn't exist at all.
The only thing I can recommend is try to use a Linux Live CD or USB stick and attempt to mount the partition on the corrupted hard drive to see if you can read any data. If you can then vacuum as much data off the drive as quickly as possible before it gets any worse. I would start with the most important data first.
