Google is by far the best search engine IMHO. It seems odd that Apple would even need to be paid to use it. What are the other options? Bing or Yahoo I guess? Not exactly that great.
They could've offered some less sums, because in the end it makes them profit, and since Apple still has a large share in the phone industry, makes sense.
What the FUCK, that stock image is from TODAY. This blatantly goes against the BBC policy of using only stock technology images from 2007 and earlier. I hope someone gets fired for this
Funnily enough it was probably completely unnecessary. Just remember the Apple Maps cockup. The end users would complain if Google wasn't at least an option and there's no chance Apple could build their own search engine, especially starting from nothing. What else are they gonna use, Yahoo?
Honestly I'd rather see Google just went about and said no to Apple users having access to their service.
Watch as iPhone sales drop massively due to lack of YouTube, Google Search, Gmail, etc.
apple is just gonna say fuck off one of these days and make their own broken search engine

As far as most people care, 'Google' means the little search box where you type in shit and it shows you results. If Apple instead opted for Bing or Yahoo, many people wouldn't notice any difference or even care (of those that would care, there would also be many who wouldn't know how to change the default search provider), while Google would lose out on millions or billions of dollars of ad revenue from millions of people who would now be using a different service.

Google would have way more to lose than Apple. No one buys an iPhone thinking 'yeah I can use Google's services and shit!'. People who think that tend to buy Androids.
