• Running PC Games From An External USB HDD

I was just wondering if I would I be able to run games such as Dead space and grand theft auto on an external USB harddrive without any slow-downs and such? Thanks
Slow downs are inevitable with usb HDD's, ive tried it myself, but its bearable most of the time
Well thats good news. Sorry to be a pain in the ass but this is my harddrive: http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/9752949/Seagate-Expansion-500GB-External-USB-2-0-Desktop-Hard-Drive/Product.html?searchstring=seagate&searchtype=allproducts&searchsource=0&urlrefer=search It's 7200rpm, which is good for even internal HDD's right?, so would it be good for running games on?

Well it seems to be pretty fast, I'm currently transfering a file from my External to my pc at 23-24mb/sec Oh, and it's USB 2.0 incase your wondering.
That should be fine IMO, ive ran plenty of games, steam games and others like WoW and it loaded just fine, took slightly longer but hey, its USB what can you expect
Good to know, I don't really mind about the loading times, as long as theres no performance drop in the games.
USB is actually quite slow, it would be much better you use SATA (although you'll probs have to open your computer up each time you want to get to it)
Im running games off my USB HDD. It's fine. It's a really bulky Iomega 500GB Desktop HDD which uses a plug and a usb.
With USB 2.0 you will get slowdowns, if possible use eSata or even USB 3.0.
It works. I used a USB external Hard drive for like a year at least and had no problems. not running like that right now though.
Just stick with the internal drives, perhaps have your external acting as a redundant disk with it being a mirror of your internal drives?
Do you have an available eSata port?
It should be fine, I take most of my games, and my steam account with me on a hard drive sometimes.
USB will work, but eSata is best case scenario.
USB will work, but eSata is best case scenario.
True, but his HDD doesn't support eSata now, does it?
If your hard drive has FireWire or eSata it would be best to use one of those since they are considerably faster. If the computer you are using it on has those ports, of course.
Go buy an eSATA or USB3 enclosure.
Thanks for all the input, Iv'e decided not to do this now.
I usually do it for smaller games like Deus Ex, Diablo and even slightly bigger MMOs like Maplestory. Usually the rule is: "If it's under 3 GB and does not rely on streamed content then it's OK"
I put all of my games on my external hard USB hard drive since my internal is too small for anything but programs and pictures and I'm too lazy to swap it out. The only problem I've had is that sometimes it stops running after being inactive for a while and I have to pull the plug and plug it back in.
