Hi there. On my brand new Sapphire Radeon R7 260x, the fan makes a grinding noise around 50% speed... why is this?
I have a fan on the side panel of the case to keep it cool, if that makes any difference.
It could be degradation of the bearing in the heatsink
That would mean a replacement or RMA if you're under warranty
Does it sound like this? :
If so it's coil whine. Sadly it appears to be common but manufacturers don't care about it because it's not actually damaging.
I have it badly on my gigabyte r9 280x, I hoped it would go away after a few months but after a year it's still doing it. It's actually really annoying and I'm thinking about buying a new card even though it's working fine otherwise.
Yeah, it does kinda sound like that. I guess I'll just try to stay away from the 50% range fan speeds. Thanks.
Have you checked the fan itself? it might need some lubrication.
Does it only happen ingame, or when the fan actually spins up (use a program like MSI Afterburner to force it higher)
If it's only ingame, try limiting your Framerate (Turn on vsync or use afterburner's limiter). A lot of old games or the main menu screen can cause whine because your GPU tries to render shit at 2000fps

You can't do that. I would just rma it.

That's true for me when I just got my card but it does it in newer games at lower fps as well now.
