This would be awesome for Cyber Cafe's.
It's only downside is it's price, considering the rumour was talking about an i7 and nVIDIA card being put into it.
I would buy. I wonder if Valve is making their own OS?

'Step 1 . To turn on your console. Turn the valve clockwise.'
When you start it the steam piston should work

And then steam emits from it's pipes.
The PCs would have a planned lifecycle, so developers could count on certain specs, with refreshes every three or four years.
PC gaming and technology in general would be a lot better if every company did this. Have a specific pre-built machine that is measured as the "standard" and leaving that as the base point of game development and advancement and then let people modding their own PC's do as they always do.
This way there would over time cause way less bottleneck by people hugging their old shit setups and optimization would be easier to prioritize for developers.
It could of course have it's downside like ignoring or really down-prioritizing any optmiziation outside of the builds the companies made as standard builds. But on the other hand only people with special needs or money to burn would bother modding their own PC if they knew they could get a top notch PC that would keep up with the game technology for 3-4 years without any special problems.
This would standardize PC gaming, so then the enthusiasts would complain that PC gaming is holding back PC gaming.
Haven't we known this for ages?
As long as I can keep my mouse I'm fine.
How much do you guys think this'll be?
How much does a PC cost?
How much does a PC cost?
Depends on the PC
My PC (2500k, 580, 8gb, 500gb hdd) costs about $1000
Wait why do you ask
For consumers, this is pretty stupid but for cyber cafes this could be a great idea.

i still dont see how this can really work as it will just be a PC and will be more expensive than building it yourself much like any prebuilt
if it were a proper console (which would suck) they could sell it at a loss
From my guess it's more then just a box, it will come with modular peripherals which you can use with your pc, but I'm not going to say for sure until the people that I know working on the hardware tell me.

Really? How much will it be? Don't you think Valve have thought about this stuff? Do you think they just said LETS MAKE ANOTHER CONSOLE? Or do you think they had a good think about it before doing anything?
I'd be tempted to buy it because "oh cool a valve product" but other than that I find it useless when my PC can run every game that I play decently.

I bet they've got something cool in the works.
A good PC that can run plenty of games isn't that pricy. I bet it's just a cheaper solution to make Steam more accessible, not just "another console" by any means.
On the end of the day its just a PC within in a Valve Themed box.
Might be something you're not expecting. Like a slingbox for your PC.
or a pc with steam preinstalled with stickers on the case
This console will more then likely run on a Linux OS... Could be one step closer for us Linux fanatics. C:
Assuming I'm reading this correctly, this could be great because it will introduce some standardization among the PC industry, making it easier for game developers to optimize their games and keep them running smoothly.

Somehow I doubt it, because the amount of games that can run on a Unix-based OS is only a small portion of what's available on Steam

They're not going to be able to run Windows, they'll be competing with Microsoft's console I doubt they'll let them use their operating system.
