First, I must give specs:
LIAN LI BLACK PC-K58W Case
AMD Phenom II x4 965 3.4Ghz
ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 880G Motherboard
Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 1GB
COUGAR 700W SX700 Power Supply
OCZ Gold 8GB DDR3 Memory
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive
Windows 7 Home Premium
I want to run BF3 on ultra and get a good FPS (60ish), but at the moment i can only run it at 30-40 fps on high at 1920x1080. I was wondering if It would be better to overclock and get a new heatsink to keep the heat down (only thing to keep me from overclocking is my shitty stock heatsink), or to just buy an AMD Phenom II x6? If i get the new CPU, I can't get the new heatsink or a second GPU (which is what i really want to get), but if i get the heatsink and overclock i can get a second 6850. Thoughts? Got another week or so for tax returns so, plenty of time.
Just overclocking probably won't get you to 60 fps on Ultra. I have a 2500k @ 4.5 ghz and a 560 Ti which is OC and I don't get 60 fps on ultra. You may get a 5-10 FPS boost, but not too much.
The x6 won't help, as it is just more cores. If you still want to overclock, then go with a Hyper 212 + or the 212 Evo cooler (evo is newer and $10 more). If you really want to upgrade your CPU, I'd wait for Ivybridge to come out.

Guess i was shooting too high for that. Would OCing + 212 Evo cooler + second 6850 help?

Two 6850s perform very well, you should be able to run Ultra. You could probably overclock too if you wanted, but I'm not really sure if it would do too much as the 965 doesn't have too much headroom (if I'm not mistaken)
I would wait for a second opinion though, just to make sure you get what you want.
All of the Phenom II quad cores run hot, most can make it to 3.8GHz or so but you need real good airflow
Phenom IIs don't overclock well since AMD has pretty much pushed the architecture to the upper limit of attainable clock speeds. Even if you managed to bump the CPU clock up a couple hundred MHz, the performance gain will be negligible.
Your best bet would to be getting a more efficient CPU, or another GPU for SLi. SLi would be cheaper since a more efficient CPU would be Intel, which means a new board.
Alright, so i decided to go with getting a new heatsink (idling temps of 64? well, probably because the heat's on :P) and a second 6850. Thanks guys! :D
