Why is it that an 8800GT and more modern cards (GTX400/500 series) are same prices?

I looked online and my current card (8800gt) is the same price as some of the newer GTX 400/500 series cards. Why are they the same price if they're so much better?
Not made anymore - the price goes higher or stays kinda same.
fuck I can not explain.
They are not made anymore and the price kind of stays the same, not dropping or anything.
Scarcity.

Because stores don't want to lose money on a product, when they buy it for 80 bucks it has to be sold for 80 or above or they make no money out of it.
If you want the economical reasoning: Supply and Demand.
The 8800GT was a moderatly succesful and popular card, but once it went out of production, it meant that there is now a limited number available for purchase anymore. People who are looking for a good reliable card (not more powerful by any means) will most likely come across this card at some point or another. This means that even though there is still a demand for the cards to continue being produced, the slowly dwindling supply of them will cause the price to increase until people are no longer interested in purchasing one.

Just kidding before you rage all over my face.

Thanks for the information. I've been away from PC building for a while so I'm lost now.

You should send those to me :v:
I remember my 8800GTS
A power spike killed it :smith:
Never had one, had a 9800 GT, though, monster of a card, it's quite surprising that it could handle.
I'm still using my 8800GTS right now
Not sure if that's something I should be pleased about using... but it feels good to know I bought it for £10 :v:
Never once had a problem with it. It is a great card but it's struggling with newer games
Yeah, that's my problem. I want Skyrim for the PC, but my current computer won't handle that.

Well, I do not mean a monster build as a nice build.
Something medium. Even a nice Phenom II X4 build can do.
you could be like me, buy a $100 watch, a $160 bike and still be too cheap to upgrade your dual core AMD CPU
I have an old XFX 8800GT. That thing was amazing back in the day.
I miss my old Nvidia 8800GTS card :(
I used to have a 9800 GTX, isn't that really just a re-branded 8800 GT?
A bit faster.
some legacy hardware increases in price
have you seen how expensive ddr2 ram got recently?
This is the card I still use today and I must say its the best one I have ever had.

We throw that shit out at work LOL
The problem with the 8800Gt was the crappy cooler
i had one but it malfunctioned the very next year, i RMA and they sent me a HD4850
which is about 5% better
I haven't had any problems. It's a beautiful card, really.
Does anyone have any news on the Southern Islands GPU family?
I've got a 9800gtx+ and I think it's about time to upgrade. But if a new family is coming on the market I don't want to buy until afterwards.
Still got my 8800GTX. It's sitting in my server and heating the room for me while I'm away. I was actually going to put a fanless 3450 in my server, but it turns out i needed the HDMI port on it.

It's probably going to be another 6 months for the new series.
