My mom needs help picking out a new laptop because her Dell was a piece of shit. My family's into the whole 'Apple is the Best' craze, but I'm a bit more skeptical.
What's the ideal laptop for general paperwork, data storing, web surfing, MS Word, Tetris, etc?
None of that Ultra-Alien Hyper Watercooled 4000X PC silliness, please.
Price isn't a huge issue. I'm also a college student if I can get a discount anywhere though.
Edit: Please post reliable laptop companies, models etc rather than just 'No, don't get a Mac.'
no

macbook pro will do that stuff. But for doing that stuff I don't think you need to pay 1k +.
a 500$ laptop will do you well, or if you want a mac a used previous generation won't run down your wallet too bad.
Also incoming opinions from people who've never used one.
Apple is good for desk work and media handling.
As far as most gamers or computer enthusiasts go, Apple fall short before reaching the starting line.
A cheap laptop would probably still work for her.
I need one that won't crap out after 12 months. No gaming, just desk work and general computer stuffs.
Depends on what you are gonna do really, if you just like to casually play games and go on facebook or office work, I'd say pEE CEE
If you are into the whole media thing, you should go with mac because it curiously has a lot larger support from the people who create video editing, audio editing and image editing porgrams.

Well then you shouldn't get a mac because you cant even change the bloody battery from what I heard, and batteries decay.

I used a gateway NV series for awhile and it worked great for basic use, they sell one for $379 that should do all that. As for the whole Mac/PC debate it really depends on what you want to use it for, I personally use a PC but most of my artist/musician friends prefer mac.

The answer to this is simple:
If you have money and like nice looking things, buy a Macbook Pro. If you don't have money and want a sensible approach to home computing, buy a Windows laptop.

I haven't seen any gateways for a long time, thought they dissapeared or something.
I remember their stuff being pretty good from what I've owned.
I have a Macbook and love it. But from what you've said she will do on it it's definitely not worth it. I know money is not an issue. but really you're better off saving $500 and getting a decent PC.
Quite frankly, I'm appalled that you rated me dumb for that.
For simple home computing like using word and browsing the internet, you couldn't have asked for better advice.

Aesthetics for something that is not designed for being in the spotlight or being amazing at everything is a little silly.
Practical and cheap make much more sense.

was a mistake, is there a way to undo that?
Also you wanted reliable brands.
Generally I think acer, gateway, samsung, acer, dell BUSINESS LINE (stay away from consumer line), and lenevo.

Exactly my point.

Just rate something else instead if it was an accident. I'd also advise you to stay away from Acer - I've had nothing but problems with them in the past.

I really need to order the part to fix mine, its only 25 bucks and 30 min of work but I boxed it up when I moved around a year ago and forgot about it till now.

Seriously? My old one was a 300 dollar one thats been going strong for 4 years.
maybe different lineups boast different qualities. Mine was the aspire series, like 5600 or something.

I guess it depends what model you're using - the one I have had absolutely no air intake and overheated so much, even when undervolted. (I've re-thermal pasted it numerous times) This was an Acer 5378G.
Am I the only who thinks a thread like this should be placed in the hardware sub-forum?
I love my MBP. I definitely recommend it. Buying a used one will save money, and you can probably get the faster one if you wanted.
Dell's shit?
Dell's laptops seem to be affordable. Some poeple may say they dont have the best hardware, but as long as your mom is sticking to the basics (ie not running BF3 in full HD graphics buhu) I would go to your local best buy or something like that and look around. I have a macbook pro, sure i love it, but i also have a desktop PC. I have the mac because i bought it cheap (seriously). But aside the whole PC master race argument, just get a basic DELL, nothing too cheap. And get her a mouse and trackpad. (i know that sounds silly but my mom would be cursing at those terrible trackpads and not think to get a mouse)

For price, yeah, dells fine. But when it comes to build quality the consumer line just isn't that durable and they end up with some problems.
If you absolutely want a Mac for that sort of stuff, I'd say go for a Macbook Air.
