The guy/girl that runs the volvo twitter must not like this news.

If it is, then I'll be mildly upset.
I feel like if it's not going to be HL3 or a new IP, a new L4D would be the best way to go with this.
Or Day of Defeat but that's not going to happen ever, I don't think.

HL2 wasn't the first source game when you think about it. And dota2 is insanely more popular than l4d.

It's not like it was gonna be a yearly thing.

That'll be a cold day in hell when Valve revisits DoD.

It's already been used by Dota2's Workshop Tools Alpha for a couple months and used by modders to create new game modes - such as the titular Frostivus event Valve delayed because it's easier to craft/implement in Source 2, as explained in their blog post.
Frostivus for the none of us.
I want Valve to revisit DoD.
Wow, actual communication from Valve? Would be nice to have that on some of their other products as well.

Last time they updated TF2, they added a note to the HLDS mail that it is not the anticipated End of the Line update.

Wasn't it Vampire : The Masquerade the first game on Source

wiki says CSS was first.
first released. Vampires was the first completed but they had to hold off until CSS was released
source 2 upgrade?

Both L4D and HL3 will have the more realistic look though, and thats whats important. Dota 2 will probably just look a bit nicer, I fail to see how much insane looking you could get with such a heavy aesthetic. Its like TF2, what can you really do to make something like that look that much better without having to change the aesthetic.
But think of the jump between HL2 and HL3 or even L4D2 and L4D3, the visual and engine will be just as impressive regardless if Dota 2 gets it first.

a new ip takes time and would only make the fans of every other established franchise mad, and god knows what state hl3 is in
and to instead use it in yet another zombie or ww2 game? kind of a bad way to promote your new, updated engine, with games we've definitely had enough of. using their most popular and recent game atm makes the most sense

But how much of that audience plays much else in Valve's catalog?
All the Dota2ers I know play mostly that and other games like it because that's what they're good at. It's a hard transfer over to FPS.

You know people have really been wanting a WW2 game recently, right?

If Dota 2 gets it first we wont notice jack shit in visual quality. It's not a game where our camera perspective is ever super close to anything.
I for one would love a DoD: Global Offensive
To the topic, they should at least make the map snowy.

uhm where did you get that from

not really? most dota 2 players I know generally tend to play a wider variety of games from the catalog in general or have in fact got into dota solely because of the fact it's a valve game with no prior dota1/hon/lol experience. I actually think this problem is a bit more of an issue vice-versa but that's a lot of personal bias so i'd rather not get into that...

with this kind of reasoning cosmetics in dota are pointless too? the camera setup dota uses isn't even that distant to anything else either really, and the current build of source2 that they showcased with it has had some pretty big difference with some specific particle effects so far, too.
RIP skeleton king
I see the reasoning behind them giving dota 2 source 2 first, aside from the fact it has the most players, valve will be able to show off a lot of the new engines features with dota 2, like map size, modding capibitlites and fancy particles.
Dota 2 has the most players per month out of all of Valve's titles, that and Valve are very passionate about it. Not surprised that it will have Source 2 first.
the source 2 update is meaningless to me until we move past this shitty 6.82 that makes every game an hour-long chore.
I would rather have them update SFM to the Source 2 engine, considering how huge people made maps in the DOTA 2 editor.
