• When I try to view a video I recorded in WMM, it plays extremely slow - help?

I bought an HD camcorder and when I upload to my computer and attempt to view the video, its basically like watching a slide show - it's extremely slow. My problem is that I'm trying to edit these videos I make. When I try to view the video through Windows Movie Maker, it's extremely slow. I can't even edit correctly because I can't properly view the video. It's just as slow when I view the video with any movie program, like VLC I think my solution would be a movie editing program (or maybe a feature on WMM) that allows me to temporarily view my video in the preview window in a lower quality - so I can properly edit it. My videos look fine on youtube, so I know it's just my computer that's being the problem. I don't want to record in a lower quality because that would mean I wasted my money when I went for the more expensive HD camera rather then an SD camera. EDIT: I'm also considering upgrading my computer because it's really slow. I'm still running windows XP (not a big deal) but the other components are pretty bad from what I can tell. My rig is about 5-6 years old. Sooo feel free to recommend upgrades :)
Specs? (of PC, obviously)
Manufacturer: INTELR Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs) Memory: 2046MB RAM Hard Drive: 500 GB Total Video Card: RADEON X1600 Series Sound Card: Realtek HD Audio output Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 All of my shit is running off one CPU, it's not really spread evenly between the two.
It sounds like you're recording video at 1920x1080 and your computer simply doesn't pack the performance needed to play it back. Are you able to set your camcorder to record at 1280x720 instead?
Also try to use a different codec, sometimes helps.

In the case of upgrading my computer, what would you guys recommend? New OS or just new parts? I might even just buy a whole new computer or something..I dunno.
An os does not increase performance. New pc if you can afford it. If not, at least cpu and gpu, depending on if it renders in hardware or software
