So my computer has a coil whine problem, but it wasn't that big of a deal. The whine would start when I would play most games. I looked it up and saw that it was no big deal and some computers just do that.
Well now it started doing it all the time, even when it's just idling, and I don't know why. Is my graphics card going bad? It's only maybe a year old. Is there anyway I can stop it?
I'm aware coil whine can be anything. The graphics card is the most likely thing since it seems to be coming from that area.
once you have it, unless you can glue the vibrations, it can't be stopped unless you replace what it is making the noise.
if it is the GPU it may even have covered caps, in which case glue won't work unless you void your warranty, and break the card all together.
unfortunately most manufacturers won't RMA for simple coil whine either.
try a new PSU though, may help remedy it
Also remember, it can not damage anything. fyi
it damages my nerves, cannot stand fucking coil whine

Technically it can over a long period of time, like years.
Each wind in an inductor has a tiny layer of varnish on them for insulation. The vibration can wear through the varnish layer eventually and cause a short.
The same thing happens in transformers over time and is the cause of transformers having voltage drift after years of use. If you have an old crusty wall wart, better check it with a meter before you plug it into anything.
-bad bump-
