Hi guys, I just replaced the motherboard for my old server computer and I got it running but then it shuts down after a few minutes. I totally forgot about applying thermal compound. Is there any way I can get it running without the need of using the thermal compound?
also, will the cpu be okay?
Use toothpaste
you serious? I mean the thermal paste is very important because my CPU isn't smooth and I had no extra time(and money) buying a thermal compound.
Try it. See what happens.
Toothpaste is good heat conductor, but it drys out a little fast
Toothpaste DO work, but as you can expect, it's not the best thermal conductor out there.
Make sure you use the white paste kind, rather than the gel type.
okay. Colgate or OralB. lol.
gonna try it, hope it will last 2-3days before my next trip to the shop buying thermal paste.
Right, use white paste kind. And replace it everyday if you use pc that much until you get thermal paste.
Hahahahaha at the toothpaste suggestion.

It's nothing extraordinary actually. I have seen people using it quite lot
Nutella will also work. Same with smooth peanut butter
So I applied the toothpaste (Fans are easy to remove but its a pain in the ass to put it back) improved a bit but the BIOS shuts the computer down after around 40mins. well, its still quite an improvement unlike just now where it shuts down at 15mins. Maybe the BIOS is set to turn off when the CPU hits 65degrees, I'll try to change it later.
To be safe, don't change
To be safe, Don't boot until you got thermal paste applied. Does the heatsink heat up?
I have heard stories of people using various edibles such as peanut butter, jam, Vegemite, ketchup, and mustard. How well they work, I haven't heard. I would assume it'd work for a short while until it dries up, however I don't know how good it is for the CPU.
65 is kinda low.
You can also underclock it until you get the paste.
Seriously, people don't understand that your CPU WILL RUN FINE WITHOUT A THERMAL COMPOUND.
Depends on the CPU, depends on the heatsink, depends on the voltage. His obviously isn't because it's shutting off (the mobo with cut the power if the cpu temp exceeds a certain limit which by default is pretty high).
Instead of putting things you would normally put in a sandwitch on your CPU to keep it cool why not just go out and buy an $8 tube of thermal compound. Seriously don't bother getting peanut butter, jelly, sperm (this doesn't go in a sandwitch btw), etc all over your hardware.
The absence of thermal compound will raise the temperature for quite a bit, but will not raise the core temperature to the point where it would considered as overheating.

It does if he sets his cuttof value at 65C.

Are you sure it's not in Farenheit?

Nevermind, that wouldn't make sense.
OP have never specified on what CPU he had

That depends.
When my P4 idled at near 55C with a heatsink and thermal paste, and got up to almost 70C in games, I wouldn't dare run that fucker without it.

Intel Pentium 4, 3.2ghz, 2mb cache. I'm running it as a server pc, also somehow the CPU cooler stopped working just now, I went to the pc store and got a new fan and thermal compound. It has been running around 6 hours and its still running at a low temperature.
So the CPU overheat I've been having must have been caused by the old faulty fan.

Did like a triple-take at your avatar.
related, use toothpaste until you get the 8$ to get the thermal compound.

My last PC was a P4 2.8GHz which ran at the temps you specified, I got the pc given from a friend, and I had it running a whole half of a year before I found out it had no thermal compound on it. Of course it did crash/BSOD randomly.

I've done this with various pentium 4's and older. Seems no one understands :sigh:
If you guys really think having no thermal compound is bad, then look at this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXh_Nfom96o.

oh yeah and this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2F_BDkEQc7I&feature=related
Be smart, get some thermal paste for 5 bucks and save yourself a lot of money by not having to buy a new cpu.
