I'm just wondering since I have this feeling that my Athlon II X4 630 might be bottlenecking my system (but it could be something else like my DDR2 RAM, I'll post specs). The exact Phenom in question is the 955BE (since its on sale for about $100 right now on Newegg).
Current specs:
Athlon II X4 630 @ 2.8 Ghz (can't find a totally stable overclock)
ASUS M4A785-M motherboard
4 GB DDR2 RAM
1 GB Radeon HD 6850
Would the better clockspeed and the addition of L3 cache make an even noticeable improvement for games in particular? If yes, what would also be a decent CPU heatsink as well?
Or should I just save that money for a more significant upgrade?
I can't think a current-gen Bulldozer even would give you a significant boost, so the Phenom is out of the question. Just play it safe and save for an i5 or Ivy Bridge processor.

Alright, I sort of thought that. The Sandy Bridge i5 is pretty sexy I will admit.

Nuff said. The Phenom X4 gets just over half of what the i5 2500k gets in Passmark. Granted they're also priced similarly to their performance but how often do you want to spend $100+ on a processor marginally better than the last one?

I agree. So maybe I'll just have to save $~300-350 for a 2500k, DDR3, and new mobo. And then at the same time, I could maybe give my parents the Athlon system, since its probably more than they will ever need (and a substantial upgrade from the Pentium 4).

eh, you might need to save more, I have a 2500k and a mobo in my cart in newegg alone and it's $325 already. thankfully I snagged some RAM from work so that's an expense I don't have to deal with, but I can't imagine it'll be less than 350 unless you buy tomorrow
also holy shit you have the same specs as me aside from a quad core CPU, I didn't even notice, same mobo and GPU and everything
