One of my friends was asking me some stuff on msconfig, i just "taught" him how to use it, but I did state that you should be careful what you untick. Is this true? Because I get some random .exe like SOUNDMAN.exe and RDIC327.exe and etc. If I were to untick something like those, would that effect startup in any way?
Certain stuff shouldn't be deleted, yes.
I would have to go take a look to tell you specifically what though.
edit: no i dont think it would affect startup, unless my afformentioned mistakes effect programs that launch on startup.
Make sure to hide all microsoft services, and google the .exe's if you're unsure.
SOUNDMAN.exe has to do with Realtek AC'97 audio. I think it's the audio software, but I'm not entirely sure.
You can get rid of everything in the startup category

Yeah and delete your program files while your at it, you'll be fine don't worry.
But seriously, there are a bunch of websites out there where you can check out what certain processes are. Just google it :D

:downs:
Having nothing running at startup is nice. Try it sometime. The only thing I let run on startup is steam.

Huh, is that possible? o.o

How would it not be?

You can
Also you can get rid of a couple of things from your services category without it effecting you

Nothing as in no 3rd party. Then again if you heavily configure it you could boot into the slimmest Windows possible with nothing but the kernel and sysdrivers on boot.

Except anything by nVidia unless you want to run in 640x480x16
You know, you can safely remove all startup processes?
I will take a screenie soon, just to make sure. The only programs I would like to startup would be RocketDock, some samurize config tool, and steam.
I already know how to remove everything, im just pretty worried something could go wrong :buddy:

Sweet.
God damn UPS software requiring Java. Can disable everything except 2.
God damn UPS software requiring Java. Can disable everything except 2.
Java runs automatically as needed, running it as startup does nothing. I removed Java from my list but my Downloader Application that is pure Java runs fine.
Actually, on windows xp, ALL startup items are listed including system files. However, in vista and 7, vital files are not listed, and you can safely untick all of them.
Damnit, then I really need to post a screenie. :science:

In my msconfig on Windows 7 RC I have "Microsoft Windows Operating System."
Logically I'd assume that that IS NOT safe to untick.

In the Startup tab, not the boot tab.

That is the sidebar. Read the exe name.

Yeah, that fucked with my head at first until I read the description.
