I think I have a virus on my computer that doesn't show up on any virus scans and its sole purpose is to move my desktop icons to random places.
I spend about 2 minutes setting up my icons the way I want to on my desktop, then later on set my computer to hibernate and when I get back on the desktop icons are randomly placed throughout my desktop.
Do I have to say some magic phrase or something to get the desktop items to stay put?
Its the fucking gnomes! they do this shit to me all the time. just get a wizard(preferably a computer wizard) to say near the computer with an invisibly spell when you are not there and then when the gnome comes to do his shit the wizard blasts the fucker to the R'lyeh where Cthulhu has his way with them. thats how i got rid of mine.
I'd check your processes and write down any strange ones (or all of them if you aren't too computer savvy) and look them up on Google. Whichever ones come up with nothing or something about viruses can be deleted by finding where they originate from. Eventually one of them will get rid of the virus.
Check that when you are coming out of or going into sleep your resolution isn't briefly changing, that would cause the icons to move around to satisfy the res change, but they wouldn't move back after.

He said they were placed around randomly. What you're thinking about is like this
= is an icon
o is a space without an icon
=====ooooo
=====ooooo
=====ooooo
oooooooooo
and what he's saying is this:
=oo=oooo=o
oo=ooo=oo
o=o=oooooo
oooooooo==
o====ooo==
I don't think its an virus. I've had several times that windows just failed to save my icon positions and reset them after a reboot.
he's saying it's after a hibernation, which saves the current session

I'm kinda surprised that BAN avatar isn't real...
@OP, I'd try Malwarebytes if you haven't already. Could be a glitch, however, which seems more likely. If you're on Windows, you can pop in your install disk and try to repair it.
Delete all of your desktop icons, or put them in a folder, and restart your computer.
Take them back out, and restart. Look at them again.
Can I stop seeing this thread?
Hey who has desktop icons? Seriously?
They make your desktop look cluttered and crap get rocketdock or rainmeter ;)
Ugh, now why would someone go and write malware for the sole purpose to rearrange desktop icons? It's like building a car to listen to the radio

why did the person who coded CIH do it even though it had absolutely no benefit to him?
There's been some pretty messed up viruses in the past that did things with desktop icons. But when I say past, I mean like, Windows 98. So I suppose some people have a thing for desktop icons. :/
If you really think it's a virus try updating all your databases.
But your anti-virus might not be picking it up; different programs pick up different viruses.
Depends what you're using.
