• 200 fps in Garry's mod?

Now, my pc is not that great... not that great at all ATI Radeon HD4670 E7500 and 4 GB ram Now, Gmod INSISTS i get almost 200 fps (186) while just being on a map. Setting up a few barrels and lighting them, I get a 110 fps drop when i shoot em. How is this possible? is gmod LYING!?
Not lying, it just needs to start processing an actual object within a map my 4890 gets 300 fps, and goes to about 230 when I spawn a prop or two in singleplayer
oh gawd. I have no idea, really. 200fps must be really nice, but if they drop that much, then there's a problem. Try reinstalling your video card drivers. Or updating.

Getting more fps than the refresh rate of your screen is pointless anyway...

turn on vertical sync, then watch your frames drop to 60. Vertical sync is better on because it prevents screen tearing.
Isn't it possible to set the framerate limit to 60 fps? Then it won't bullshit about it?

screen tearing is really only noticeable during movies where there's intense screen panning. If your playing a game, you aren't moving as much so you really can't tell.
I always leave vsync on in my games
With a GTX 480 and an i7 920 overclocked to 4GHz, I get 299FPS (seems to be the limit) all the time. Unless I do something, like shooting.

The reported FPS is correct. What you have to understand is that FPS is not linear, being 1/frametime(in seconds). The difference from 4000 to 2000 fps is much less than from 60 to 30, for example. At these FPSes a seemingly large loss like yours isn't really all that much of a time loss. You also have to understand how realtime graphics work. In addition to running calculations on the barrel's entity, the graphics pipeline opens a new batch for the barrel. Each batch added increases the overhead. For example, if you spawned a second barrel, they would probably be in the same batch, so the time loss would be less than the first added. Also, keep in mind that in addition to physics and logic processing, Source also has to calculate ambient lighting and other graphics parameters for the barrel. tl;dr Don't worry about it. Your computer is doing more when you add a barrel, and so it takes a fraction of a second longer to render each frame. FPS is not a linear measurement, so at high FPS, small differences appear larger. EDIT: Just noticed the "lighting them" and "shooting them". There is a lot going on when you do these things: spawning fire particles, calculating any dynamic lighting(relatively expensive), spawning gibs/decals/physics explosions, and more. Of course your FPS drops a lot.

You get the 200 FPS because of your CPU. It's 60, not 200. It just says 200

Well, no, not exactly. It just means the cycles are the same. For instance, 60hz means the screen refreshes 60 times per second, regardless of what is being sent to it. 60 FPS means the video card produces that amount of frames per second and sends it to the screen. If you are standing perfectly still at 60 FPS in Gmod with people moving around everywhere on a 60hz refresh rate, you will not notice the difference between 120fps and 60fps. However, if you have 120fps and you look around very quickly with your mouse, it will feel smoother than 60 fps. I've tested this before in every single game out there, I can't exactly explain it in words, but it does feel smoother.

(I swear I saw a smilie for this) ^_^
naw man, mine does the same, i get 160fps on most maps at start. Once i spawn a couple NPC's or Props, goes down to about 50-70 and stays there. Its normal :v:
Fuck I get only 60 FPS when I'm just on a map.
