• How do I get into freelance graphic design
    23 replies, posted
I am currently looking for freelance graphic design work, but I don't know where to look. I'd really like to work on some simple, local projects, but I don't know where to begin. I've checked out Craigslist, but they don't really have anything. I want to focus mainly on making ads, posters, banners, web images, etc. I'm really good with Photoshop and I'm trying to learn Illustrator this Summer along with some more Dreamweaver since these are the programs that seem to appeal to small companies and the like. I also don't really have a medium to display my work with, is there any sort of free portfolio website that I could use to display some of my sample work? Thanks guys! Here's a few things I did for a band I was previously involved with: (This goes on a T-Shirt) [IMG_thumb]http://i42.tinypic.com/o6whnc.png[/img_thumb] (This is just a poster I made out of boredom) [img_thumb]http://i41.tinypic.com/168664g.jpg[/img_thumb] (Here's just a Godfather-esque picture I made of myself) [img_thumb]http://i40.tinypic.com/rqyijm.jpg[/img_thumb] Most of these are pretty basic, but I made all of them from scratch or some royalty free photos. Here's some more: [img_thumb]http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs492.snc3/26891_119819324699365_100000138951995_295672_8111292_n.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs461.snc3/25340_118994218115209_100000138951995_291372_2867705_n.jpg[/img_thumb] vhttp://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs461.ash1/25340_119072894774008_100000138951995_291878_823808_n.jpgvv[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://hphotos-sjc1.fbcdn.net/hs441.snc3/25340_118994214781876_100000138951995_291371_2483067_n.jpg[/img_thumb] Puma Shoes: [img_thumb]http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs492.ash1/26891_120661797948451_100000138951995_299097_7410623_n.jpg[/img_thumb]
The main problem is that I'm only in high school and don't have a diploma, but I got an A+ average in my Computing for College and Career, Web Design, and Photography courses at school, so I guess I can use that as a source of credibility. [editline]05:33PM[/editline] I'm talking more like editing pictures for various reasons, usually ads and the like. I guess I'll look over a few tutorials on key skills to have when doing such a thing. I've made some posters for a band I used to be in as well as some T-Shirt designs.
I'm really good with Photoshop
lol
Okay [editline]05:46PM[/editline]
lol
Good contribution.
i think a priority for you is to get an online portfolio. there are a bunch of ones you can use that look pretty good, but most you have to pay a small amount for. try keeping an eye out for student competitions and other non-professional stuff as well, all to add to your portfolio. examples of your work are what are going to get you the work - this needs to be your priority. - i've just finished my 1st year of a graphic design degree :) [editline]10:50PM[/editline] also talk to friends in bands if they want flyers/posters/logos doing for free. don't expect to be making any money at this point. [editline]10:52PM[/editline] http://carbonmade.com/ this place is where i was thinking of, but there is a fee for hosting your work
Just don't, the job market for graphic design is already overpopulated.
You're not gonna get much freelance work with that skillset. Sorry I'm just sayin.
Some of it is nice, other parts of it is meh. Try drawing logos and shit - not ones of companies that actually exist, but you get the point.
online portfolio + a business card you designed your self.
Get a steady job. Do graphic design as a side-job. Keep an online website where you put up new stuff, and advertise a bit.
if he really wants to be a graphic designer then to be honest, he's going to need to study it properly. having it as a side-job will not really help matters.
also talk to friends in bands if they want flyers/posters/logos doing for free. don't expect to be making any money at this point.
That's how Johnny Cupcakes made his name. He went to gigs and sold his t-shirts out the back of his car. Now people love him.
Here's a sample poster I made for a show: It was based off of this one (Made by the actual venue):
Yours is actually like 10x better
Yours is actually like 10x better
Thanks :) Here's one I made for just one band that I used to be in: I think this poster turned out decent. I can agree that some of the works in the OP are mainly pointless / amateur.
you need to stop mixing completely different styles of fonts
you need to stop mixing completely different styles of fonts
Thats to show the different bands
you need to stop mixing completely different styles of fonts
If he didn't mix the fonts then it would look horrible. Did you even bother to realize that the seemingly random assortment of words are band names as Deac said?
If he didn't mix the fonts then it would look horrible. If you don't mind not being paid I could use your services.
If you don't mind not being paid I could use your services.
Sure, tell me what you want, and if there's a specific font and I'll try it out. [editline]09:05PM[/editline]
I was actually talking about every font except the band logos and Trajan in this placement just looks like garbage
Hey man, I'm just seeing criticism, there's nothing constructive about your posts, or really any of your other posts for that matter. First of all I wasn't asking if I was qualified to make something that you approved of, I was just asking how I get started in getting my name out there for simple graphic design.
