I hear bitcoin is not even worth the effort anymore unless you have a large CPU farm to mine with. Is this true?

Even then it's not worth the effort. You would waste more money on the electricity than by selling bitcoins. At least with the current exchange, but then again, I haven't seen the math myself, so maybe it's profitable if it jumps to $150 per coin or something.

You need a GPU farm.
They're now selling these little USB computers that use only 35 watts or something and get 10x the hashes that a GPU does, so the whole "Electricity bill" thing goes out the window.
And then the amount you can mine drops.
Only one I would consider getting is Stacking. I don't really care about Costume Quest or Brutal Legend and I already have Psychonauts.
Watch as the allowances for bitcoin cost more than what it brought in, like on Reddit.

it's basically spending a ton in electricity to create monopoly money
Is stacking any good?

Monopoly money that buys you weed and everything else.

It's way more complex than simply more power. You need more efficiency with mining. CPU's can mine, but they use so much power. GPU's are barely profitable now with their efficiency.
You need specialized hardware now for the most part to be profitable with power use.
