from what I can tell, this is better than expected?
from what I can tell, this is better than expected?
Yes. Basically, before this deal things were connected like this Comcast customers - Other ISPs and shit - Netflix hosting Now it's Comcast customers - Netflix hosting Less travel = faster streaming.
Though it seems to have an immediate benefit I can't help but have a bad feeling about this.
I use Netflix, I use Comcast, this is good news.
From what I understand this is different than Net neutrality. Basically Comcast and Netflix signed a deal to positively increase bandwidth between their networks and backbones. Comcast isn't specifically charging netflix for otherwise free bandwidth.
i wish comcast would fuck off.
i wish comcast would fuck off.
Comcast is doing something cool for once and you're gonna bitch about them?
And I've seen articles saying that ISPs have been throttling Netflix.
As far as I know, that's only Verizon right now. There are actual reports with them specifically dropping netflix packets
And I've seen articles saying that ISPs have been throttling Netflix.
As Brt said, so far only Verizon has been showing a reduction in Netflix quality. It actually surprises me that it's only them doing it, especially considering the reputations of some of the other big ISPs like TWC and Cox. My guess is they know that soon the FCC will have Net Neutrality back in full force and either think it's not worth reconfiguring their network twice and/or don't want to be at the top of the FCC's shitlist.
Comcast is doing something cool for once and you're gonna bitch about them?
How is this Comcast doing a good thing though? Pretty sure they have been intentionally throttling the speed of Netflix until they paid. They are basically blackmailing Netflix into giving them money to receive normal network treatment.

I know they throttle bittorrents, though that's still not entirely universal. I'm on comcast and besides some outages, I'm actually really pleased with my service. We pay for 50/10 and get about 75/20 sustained. No issues with netflix for me.
