Today has not been good to tablet devices. After Microsoft announces the end of their Courier project, TechCrunch reveals that sources close to HP are now saying that their upcoming HP Slate has also been canned.
First announced by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer earlier this year at CES 2010, the HP Slate was intended to run Windows 7 with a capacitive multi-touch display in a compact slate form factor. Insider sources now reveal that HP was not entirely satisfied with the OS and decided to cancel the product. What exactly they were unsatisfied with is unknown, though early speculation reasons that unsatisfactory battery life and user experience issues could have played a leading role.
With their recent Palm acquisition, HP could be shifting their roadmap towards webOS and ARM-based devices instead. A move like that would make the most sense and kill two birds with one stone, as mobile ARM processors are extremely efficient and webOS very user friendly and light.
A move to to ARM would also rule out the possibility of running Windows natively on the device, as Microsoft’s flagship operating system is based on x86 architecture.
FUCK
Damn
It's not bad really, they're going to be making a WebOS device instead. An OS that's actually built for mobile devices (although they did seem to have some fancy UI on top of Windows 7 but people were saying it was slow etc). It will be the equivalent of iPhone OS on the iPad.
Hm. HP's cancel isn't offical though.

What about the people like me who wanted Windows on a tablet device. I could put that to use instantly and constantly. I could have dealt with a little lag here and there, now I'm left in the cold.

That's why there's a ? in the title.
wow, it wouldn't have sold anyway :D
wow, it wouldn't have sold anyway :D
You're telling me there isn't 1 person who'd buy this?
You're telling me there isn't 1 person who'd buy this?
obviously not, there are people who might think its good for them
but it won't sell... as in not have much of a place in the market
obviously not, there are people who might think its good for them

That's what we all said about the iPad too.
That's what we all said
I don't hate the ipad, I don't hate the HP Slate
HP Slate has a few better points than the ipad, like the camera funtions for example but its still a pc adapted to a tablet, where as the ipad has been designed from scratch to be a tablet computer
applications and facilities that make the ipad unique
hp slate is nothing unique
ipad will sell, hp slate won't
FIRST THE COURIER! Now the Slate, God fucking damnit! What next the iPod range getting canceled!
What next the iPod range getting canceled!
next ipod range?
Yay!
Well, the hands on I saw of the device said it wasn't all that good anyways.
its windows 7 on a tablet device............I'm actually going to vomit
its windows 7 on a tablet device............I'm actually going to vomit
Windows 7 does multitouch and much more.
Change the UI a bit and it'll be perfect for tablets. Also open filesystems beat closed filesystems (even if you can jailbreak them).
I was actually thinking about getting one of these, it seemed pretty cool.
Bleh, format the damn thing and I assure you it would have been wonderful since Windows 7 supports tablets.
Thank you HP for shitting up your products with so much free bloatware that you actually canceled one of them because of it.
[editline]03:54AM[/editline]
It supported 3G if I remember also, that would have been awesome...
It supported 3G if I remember also, that would have been wonderful...
It would probably have replaced the computer I have to bring to school everyday. And with 3G, fuck the internet at the schools, it's slow as shit anyway since there's so many users on it, and a few people downloading constantly.
So 3G is a nice addition to any PC.

And that's exactly the problem.
[editline]12:25PM[/editline]
Also the world doesn't need yet another underpowered Win 7 device, so I'm glad this is dead
Go put your useless-for-touch sausage fingers where the sun don't shine man, nobody is forcing you to buy it. You hate touch, okay, we get it.
'Tablets' with gimped operating systems are stupid.

The Ipad is just the iPhoneOS software, lovely restricted and closed design.
