I'd be okay with a mention like that but I don't really give a damn about how he was recently pulled into dark souls and what bosses he's beaten

If the 'journalist' here was able to pass an english class, he sure as hell wouldn't be sitting here typing up crap articles for PCGamer anywho.
Your first paragraph is supposed to grab your attention. Give you a taste on what the context of the article is about. In this case, Mr Donnelly here opens up on his experiences in the game like someone cares to listen to what bullshit hes up to anyways.
Games Journalism doesn't have to be this bad, but for some reason they just prefer to stick with their "I skated by getting D's in highschool" mentality.
