• How do you explain Virtual PC to a Computer illiterate person?

I'm trying to find a way to explain this to somebody and I'm trying to think that's as dumbed down and stupid as possible.
pc inside of a pc.
I guess you could get away with telling them it's emulating a computer. Not strictly true, but for the purpose of explaining to someone with no knowledge of the subject, it would do.
pc inside of a pc.
I tried saying that to him and he still didn't get it.
I guess you could get away with telling them it's emulating a computer. A virtual PC is a program that emulates the a computer. The desired operating system (ie. Windows XP) is installed on the emulated computer from within your operating system of choice.

It's like putting a car inside a plane.
That still seems quite complicated...
Virtual computers are complicated.
It's like putting a car inside a plane.
Nope.
It's like putting a car inside a plane.
Except it is more like a plane inside a plane
Except it is more like a plane inside a plane
Nope.
Tell him he is stupid.
Don't be a joykill. This thread has turned from serious to fun.
Tell him every PC has a mini PC inside it just in case the user wants to run a virtual machine.
He uses Windows XP.
Tell him it's magic.
Except it is more like a plane inside a plane
Nuh uh. Car is slower and holds less, but can still be useful for stuff. Just like a virtual PC is slower and (might) have less storage than your actual PC.
Nuh uh. Car is slower and holds less, but can still be useful for stuff. Just like a virtual PC is slower and (might) have less storage than your actual PC.
But virtual machines are good for hiding porn and cars aren't good for smuggling.
He must be really dumb if you need to explain the word "emulate" It's not a computer only word, you know?
Tell him he is stupid.
I smiled.
Tell him its a magic computer that can play your vidyagames
He must be really dumb if you need to explain the word "emulate" It's not a computer only word, you know?
He was raised on a farm. He's not dumb he's just...short on his vocabulary.

Personally I use cars and roads for all analogies to do with computers but I can not think of a good one for this.
:iiaca:
Tell him its just like a computer thingy that allows you to put run another computer inside your computer
Running two instances of windows simultaneously, where the second session is running inside of "a box"
Its like your PC is pretending to be another PC. Like its wearing a costume
Personally I use cars and roads for all analogies to do with computers but I can not think of a good one for this.
It's like playing with a little plastic pretend car while driving down the highway in a real car.
its like using a pc while you're using your pc [editline]11:36PM[/editline] dawg
