Okay so I ran into another snafu last night.
Here is what happened. I had nothing but a web browser and a chat client open. Upon plugging in a USB drive, my monitor suddenly loses video signal. Windows is still running (I hear the sounds).
Upon reboot, it stays this way. Monitor can't get a video signal on POST no matter what I do. Even putting the PC down to barebones (video card, 1 stick of ram, CPU and keyboard only with a CMOS reset) I couldn't get the MoBo to show a video signal.
Here is my PC:
Intel QX6850 CPU
560 Ti 1GB
4GB of RAM
2 HDD
DVD Drive
Coolermaster 550w PSU
P5N-D ASUS MoBo
Now all signs point this to being a PSU issue. But, I am doubtful because I don't understand how everything can power up just fine, except the video signal is the PSU is toasted.
There is also the fact that my MoBo is an ASUS p5n-d. Upon extensive research online issues related to the above black screen problem are rampant with all sorts of ASUS MoBo's, and said issues were fixed with getting a new one. As a matter of fact, ever since I got my MoBo I've had minor problems here and there with it fully operating. Such as:
1. I cannot get my USB keyboard to work unless I boot from a cold-boot (power cord out, sit for a few hours). The MoBo just refuses to recognize it otherwise.
2. My sound output inexplicably stopped working one day. I had to re-route it to my rear output and tell windows my rear output was my front one in the registry to get it to work again.
This is what makes me think it is a mobo issue. I tried re-wiring everything so that things were on their own rails and more evenly distributed, but this didn't help at all. The molex connectors all look fine.
I doubt it is a GPU issue because the GPU is brand new, and this kind of problem is more telling of a PSU or MoBo problem (plugging in USB = no video signal)
I appreciate all the help. Reguardless, I ordered a GIGABYTE mobo that should arrive next tuesday. Even if it turns out it is a PSU issue, I need to get rid of this relic MoBo I have in there now. I just wanted FP's insights into what it might be.
user issue

also did you try unplugging and plugging back the video cable into the monitor?
What do you think? Of course I did. And yeah, sounds like a monitor going black when I plug in a USB drive is a user issue :downs:
Try using your friend's PSU (If you don't have one, you may have a spare one) and connect it.
If it still doesn't work, it may be RAM, GPU, CPU or mobo.
In my case it was the mobo.
I didn't get post signal, but the fans kept whirling.
Fucked around with it and it shut itself down after 3 seconds each time I started it.
Got a new GIGABYTE mobo in and hooked it up.
Defineatly did the trick - everything is working as normal now. Moral of the story: avoid ASUS MoBo's like the plauge.

Wow, one bad ASUS board and all their boards are bad? ASUS is one of the best motherboard manufacture out there.
P5N-* boards are completely awful

Both ASUS and Gigabyte are about equally good.

Even if they are, at least Asus don't look like a Fischer Price toy.
ASUS boards are actually very damn good, the only problems I have had with them were comic sans and engrish.

gigabyte boards are matte black now bro

I have a Gigabyte board, I had an ASUS board previously and it was a lot better. For one it could actually take an overclock of over 3ghz, whereas I can literally get 2.99ghz from my 2.4ghz stock E4600 but if I hit 3 or 3.01 then the board won't post.
their amd boards are still blue but it's not as bad as their rainbow boards on lga775

I like the Gigabyte's Blue/Light Blue desing like the one on my Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R

But yea to the discussion Gigabyte and ASUS make both damn good motherboards, but personally i prefer Gigabyte over any other brand when it comes to motherboards.
Have had always good experiences with Gigabyte motherboards.
I have had Asus motherboard from when started playing with computers, they always worked which is good enough for me.

I've had issues with my MoBo since day 1, and the GIGABYTE on is working better than it ever did.
I thought it was just an issue with my P5N-D, but upon looking online for solutions to my problems these are apparently very common problems with all ASUS boards for my chipset. I couldn't find any solved problems - the only fixed ones to the issues I was having from several sources that also had ASUS boards was to buy a different MoBo. And hey- it worked.
I know its a blanket statement, which is my bad. All I know is that my ASUS board had many minor issues preventing it from working right, and these are also very common problems for other ASUS board owners when I was researching into ways to solve it. Maybe more current generation boards are much less faulty or it was simply a common issue with my run.

Ive had my ASUS P5KC mobo for 3 years now without fault, even through multiple upgrades its worked great.

Gigabyte's newest ones look very good too, since they've switched to matte black PCB's.

This. Asus + LGA775 + Nvidia chipset + low price = avoid
