So I have a custom built pc that has a an amd fx 8 core cpu that I like. Ive had no problems with it but its more of a family pc. Id like to have my own to mess arround with and break. I was considering getting another fx but everyone here raves about the intel's. I have no problem with that its just i dont know what to buy. Currently i have a asrock 890gx pro mb with the fx and a xfc radeon 6870 2gb graphics card. I dont really wana go down in performance but i dont wana spend to much. I didnt see any i7's that are 8 cores but from my lurkings i have learned that the fx "isnt really 8 cores". So thats fine. Basically im asking whats/is there a good build with a great processor and gpu that i could get for around $800. I can afford to go over a little. Thanks!
So are you building a totally new pc or are you just upgrading the family pc?
Totally new. They dont want me messing with the other one.. Even though im the one who built it...
I didnt see any i7's that are 8 cores but from my lurkings i have learned that the fx "isnt really 8 cores". So thats fine.
The only octa core Intel CPUs you're going to find are on the LGA2011 socket and start out at $1030 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117266 Each core is only 2.0 GHz, which means that it's more geared to highly threaded applications. You could bump up to the 3.1 GHz version, but that'll run you $1900: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117272 And you're right about the AMD Bulldozer not being a true octa core CPU. In reality, it's a quad core processor with some shared and duplicated functionality in the chip. It's basically similar to Intel's Hyper Threading scheme. I would go with something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115234
CPU+Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1030147 ($312) GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150608 ($230) HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185 ($90) PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371016 ($65) Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147153 ($50) Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233202 ($46) Dvd Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151244 ($15) If you can salvage a dvd drive do so and save some money. You also have the option to downgrade your GPU to an HD6870 if you can't go over $800. Also, do you need an OS or any peripherals like a keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc? Otherwise, this build is solid. Total: $818 [editline]11th August 2012[/editline] Although, I should ask what you plan to do with your pc?
I like the build. I managed to get a case for our family pc..(I call it the server because it runs server 2008 r2 and host websites and several game servers and some hyperVM's). It was an awesome case it had like 4 big fans built in and came with a psu for like... $60. Here it is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811822001 seems like its been discontinued though. Probably game, Minecraft, gmod, source games. Some video editing in sony vegas. php, java, lua, and vb programming. Virtual Machines. OS and everything else is taken care of. Also if I wanted to get 16gb of ram should I just get another set of those 2x8 gb sticks?
