The stock zalman cooler on the 9800GT is loud as all fuck, sleeping with it running is pretty damn hard. I can't adjust the fan speed, therefore it runs at 100% 24/7 (2 pin fan connector) I have an antec 900 so there is air flow running over the heatsink, unplugging the fan makes the gpu idle at about 60 degrees celsius and was just wondering if this could damage the card in the long run? I only keep downloads running over night, so the computer is unloaded basically.

My 8800GTX idles at 70C with fan on. I think that's a pretty good temp.
Letting it idle at 60c is fine, you know...especially if you're just leaving the computer on overnight while you sleep. You only worry at 85 degrees and up.
Turn off, your computer, this is redicoulous. You can save money too by turning it off.
Turn off, your computer, this is redicoulous. You can save money too by turning it off.
He already says he is downloading stuff overnight. Have you tried rivatuner to adjust fan speed? Idle temps of 60 degrees Celsius seems fine to me.
Have you checked for dust inside the fan?
My 8500GT idle's on 70C, It's a fine temperature.
For fucking load temperatures.
It says the Operating Temperature goes up to 105, so it doesn't matter whether the GPU is under load or not, 105 is way higher than 59
My 9800 GT idles at 60C and hits 95C at full load. I don't worry.
The thing is, the fan connector is a 2 pin. Not a conventional 3 pin, so I can't control the speed of the fan. If 60 is fine then I guess I'll be able to sleep like a baby when ever I need to download :D
My 88000 idles at around 66, that temperature is actually in my opinion decently good.
my gtx 260 idles at 46c, i thought that was hot. i have the fans maxed at 72c...
My 88000 idles at around 66, that temperature is actually in my opinion decently good.
Did you steal delorean by any chance? My 8800GTS idles at 68-70C so I think it's fine.
My 9800 GT idles at 60C and hits 95C at full load. I don't worry.
Except that the idle temperature which is around 45C, that's the same temperature of my GTX 480 when the fan is forced to run at 75% constantly.
