I've been uploading videos to YouTube for a while now and, embarrassingly, I use Windows Movie Maker to render my videos. It did the job well enough, but after switching ISPs my upload speed has been complete shit. Can anyone recommend a good program for compressing high-quality videos?
How much editing do you need to do? If it's none, then something like MediaCoder, Format Factory, or Adobe Media Encoder are good choices. If you need to do any editing, then you'll struggle to find anything that's (legally) free and better than Windows Movie Maker. You could use the trials for Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere as short-term solutions.
compressing HQ videos will turn them into shit.
Just look at a youtube video in 240p
looks like something you watch on an old black and green nokia phone.
like wiggles said if you find any software that is free it'll either be as powerful as Windows movie maker.
If you really are interested into video editing check out sony vegas trial. Its a very good window into that world.
Don't want to make a new thread, but what are the strengths/weaknesses of Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere?
sony vegas
Pros
-Cost less than adobe premier
-Easy to understand and start right away
-Bunch of plugins
Cons
-Less configurable than adobe products
-Is less optimized than adobe
Adobe premier
Pros
-Highly configurable
-Compatible with pretty much every files available
-Compatible with all of the adobe products ex: After Effects
Cons
-Really expensive ( Unless youre a student,I think you can get a rebate or something)
-Hard at first to grasp
I suggest to start with sony vegas first.

I don't think Adobe Premiere was that hard for basic things - but I must admit there is a gap between basic editing & advanced effects - but the link with After Effects & Photoshop easen up a lot.
(Also, I always fucked rendering up when I tried Vegas)
If you allready have a background with any adobe products yeah you'll understand a lot faster but if you're new to video editing its a hell of a big mountain to climb to get good results.
youtube tutorials will help a lot.I know it did for me.
ffmpeg
If you don't like command line, try this, which is a GUI for it and some other tools:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/FFCoder
For specific codecs, I personally like h.264 -- best size/quality ratio I've seen so far, if you get the settings right (myself, I use a 21 or 23 quantizer, but experiment a bit and see what works best for you).
For lossless (or at least close-to-lossless), which isnt exactly what the OP specified, as it's still fairly large, Huffyuv or Lagarith are good choice. Grab a copy of VirtualDub to use those.
If you want to keep using WMM, you can dump the output file into FFCoder. Don't think it works with VirtualDub though.
For editing, with the right filters, VirtualDub and Avisynth is actually quite useful, though it's not a non-linear editor like WMM or Sony Vegas or what have you. But if you're strapped for money but not time, theres lots of things you can do.
Like the above video suggested, Handbrake is awesome. Don't be too scared of how complicated it looks, you can just make a preset and after that it's just a couple of clicks.
Handbrake is useful, but personally I've found it rather finicky.
