Like I read somewhere, months ago, that they were going to lighten up on the "Finding out you have cancer, your wife leaving you for your sister, and you ran over your cat" feeling that the game has no problem injecting into your spinal cord.

No. They want to make it more accessible, meaning for example core aspects of the game wont be as hidden as they were in Dark Souls (such as the darkwraith covenant).

I just hope there'll still be stuff like Ash Lake, an entire massive section totally hidden away until you roll into an arbitrary wall somewhere in the game.

It probably will - as I said, it'll be things that are actually core features of the game that won't be hidden this time.
