Hi, I've never tried anything like this before, so bear with me.
It's high time that I've upgraded from my current desktop, the compact case and graphics card has severely limited me.
I looked around on Newegg.com and chose these parts as a preliminary build. Since this is my first time, I'm probably forgetting to include some parts, or have incompatible parts on my list.

One minor thing, but you could probably get away with just 8GB of RAM.

You'd save $50 too, if you care about the cost. What's the budget?

$1200 budget.
I chose the 16GB one because I've heard from many sources that RAM is integral to running demanding games smoothly. Would changing to 8GB decrease performance noticeably?

RAM doesn't have a ton to do with game performance. Usually CPU and GPU are the main bottlenecks. Your CPU and GPU look good, so you shouldn't have much problem running demanding games. 4GB might even be enough, but that would be pushing it. I recommend just getting the 8GB. I currently only have 4GB of RAM, and I haven't noticed any significant performance issues. Then again, the most demanding game I currently run is the STALKER series. :v:

NO, DO NOT GET A 550TI
based on what you currently have:

1. 16GB of RAM for gaming is complete overkill
2. The 550ti is a crappy gaming card, with that budget you can get something much better, like a 570
you could probably get a cheaper case and use the saved money to get an SSD as a boot drive, too
Thanks for all the feedback guys!
I've switched out my 16GB for 8GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233147&Tpk=CMZ8GX3M2A1600C8 and made sure to choose a compatible one this time.
I've also switched from the 550 ti to a GTX 570: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130593
and replaced my case with this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042
This has raised the cost to $1194, just under my budget.
You probably won't be needing more than 500-600W, let alone a HX750.
actualy if you wanted, I could sell you my 580GTX for $300, nothing wrong with it, just my dad says if I can sell it for $300CAD minimum we'll upgrade to the 680
Get a different PSU. Corsair's high end line are just overpriced Seasonics. If you want modularity get a fully modular one.

If you don't really care for full modularity get this one. It's the exact same internals anyway.

If he ever wants to SLI he might as well get something in the 700-800W range now.
