Intel and AMD are getting fucked up with people swapping to arm powered tablets and phones instead of buying new x86 desktop machines for facebook and tumblr. Adapt or die...
AMD is already adapting, they're much more open to alternatives since they're already being beaten to a pulp by Intel in the x86 space. Intel, on the other hand, is too proud to license ARM. They have some of the best design teams in the industry, they can manufacture in-house whatever they design... this is why they're betting on Clover Trail to take on ARM.

They're the sort of powerhouse that can provide significant competition in both mobile and desktop markets, which is good for everyone.
They're probably working on something new for mobile devices at the moment. They have a habit (at least lately) of stomping everyone that even thinks of competing with them.
