why would anyone even buy games from the steam store at this point ill just buy the steam key on gmg
Great, so we can get screwed over even more by developers/publishers like Firaxis/2K who don't drop their prices at all for Australia and forget Australia exists? (Seriously. Civ V is still $70USD in Australia.)
Haha wow you dudes always get fucked I'm sorry for laughing it's not even funny pffft

Buying $60 usd new releases on steam is fucked anyway just get a key from ozgameshop or some other key site
Way to encourage not buying from steam.
People in Illinois have been paying high tax rates on Steam for years now.
I wonder what the effect from the insane and constant price fuckery is on Australian piracy statistics.
People in Illinois have been paying high tax rates on Steam for years now.
The problem is this is on top of Steam already forcing us to pay in USD but keeping the number displayed on the store the same as other retailers. So a typical new AAA release is $90AUD here, which means Steam charges $90USD for most, which comes out to about $120AUD after currency conversion and your bank's fees for paying in a different currency, and now they want to slap another 10% tax on top of that. Fuck buying games from Steam. [editline]22nd February 2017[/editline] I know the article says the extra tax won't be added on, but I really don't trust publishers not to inflate their prices on the Australian storefront even more to make up for it based on how they already act.
If they're going to charge GST then they better let us pay with AUD on the store.
Way to encourage not buying from steam.
is this not the fault of the governments
People in Illinois have been paying high tax rates on Steam for years now.
I doubt Illinois tax rates make the purchase $17 more every $60 release like Australians are going to be charged starting in July.
Well that does it, never giving a single cent to steam ever again.
Not only do we have to pay in USD, we also often already pay MORE USD than other countries.
People in Illinois have been paying high tax rates on Steam for years now.
wait what I need you to elaborate here, I don't feel much with chicago's 10% taxes already sucking up chunks of dosh
Well that does it, never giving a single cent to steam ever again.
Implying Valve has anything to do with this change. You best get used to not buying games from other online stores while you're at it since this is a move by federal government, which means - or it's at least best to assume - that at some point down the road other stores will be falling under this tax as well.
Is it all steam purchases? I wonder if microtransactions will also be affected.
All of you nuggets complaining about the tax are idiots. By law the tax should be applied, that's just fair game. That's nothing to complain about. What you should complain about is the artificially blown out game prices here due to us living in Australia.
It's also good to remember that this doesn't have direct affect onprices as such, games will still be the same price, except sales in Australia have the GST applied, so Australia gets a cut. Word is that developers in Australia still had to pay GST one way or another, haven't been told that detail, but now it applies to all developers worldwide. And thus, a price increase will have to be set by publisher/developers within the steam partner applet for Australians. Thus, they way this has an affect, is if developers raise the price of their games... even further. So unless they want to increase the price of Civ, it will still cost 70 dollars, but seven of those will be taxed
Wow, I used to buy games off G2A but then switches after I began to feel bad. Once this happens, im never buying from steam again. Seriously, I already shelled out 20 more aud than i need to for AAA games and now im going to get ripped off even more
So whatever happened to AUD coming to Steam in 2014?

That's how I got around paying more in pounds for a game when I could just transfer some money to a US paypal and bought from the US store. Yeah you loose a bit on paypal's cut but it's not as bad as you'd think if you're moving 200 pounds into usd and that covers your gaming purchases for a good while if you're frugal already, the savings for Australians would be significant I assume. At absolute worst if they gave the fuck around you can also create a new steam account from the region you want and gift games to your main account from it.

What, you guys didn't think constantly fucking steam over because of their refund policy was going to be free, did you?
What, you guys didn't think constantly fucking steam over because of their refund policy was going to be free, did you?
And the following countries; Switzerland, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Iceland, South Africa, and India.
Just wondering, are there others on here that don't have to pay taxes for Steam games?
They probably don't like getting sued by countries who's citizens happen to purchase their products, so if those countries have Goods and Services taxes, then valve is going to start including them instead of just having it taken out of their pocket later.
Just wondering, are there others on here that don't have to pay taxes for Steam games?
I've always been subject to sales tax on Steam purchases unless I fraudulently claim my address to be out of state since I'm in the same state they're headquartered in (which has a sales tax).
I hate to defend them but to be fair, we're expecting them to adhere to Australian law in terms of sales and refunds. Now it seems the Australian government is (likely as a result of that court case) expecting them to pay GST for operating in Australia. It sucks but it's Australian law that's doing this, as I understand it. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
