• Choosing between different GTX 1070's

So I've elected a 1070 for my new rig, but as it turns out it's not so simple. There's different brand 1070's (EVGA, MSI, Asus...) and even then there's different 1070's to choose from even excluding the Founder's Edition, so I'm at a bit of a stump. I was eyeing the MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X but I've heard bad things about MSI's motherboards (unrealiability etc), wondering if there's the same problem with their GPU's and really just wondering what the best brand for an nVidia card is in general.
MSI's are great. No real problems with their motherboards besides using killer NICs but that's not an issue exclusive to them. EVGA generally makes a great one.
I'll second the EVGA suggestion.
I had an MSI GTX560ti. RIP
Evga has an insanely good warrenty (free too) and will return it even if you just have coil whine pretty good cooler too
Evga has an insanely good warrenty (free too) and will return it even if you just have coil whine pretty good cooler too
The cooler is significantly easier to remove than the MSI card I had as well, making thermal paste reapplication and if you want to swap to a water cooled card a lot less of a pain. The screws just weren't stuck in the force of a thousand men.
the 1070 is supposed to cost $380 for the non-founders edition. if a retailer wants more don't buy it, they are taking advantage of their limited quantities.
Personally I'd wait to see how the RX 480 fares - it's not gonna be up there with the 1070, but you'll probably end up with much better value. Depends on your needs, of course.
Just a heads-up however, the MSI GTX 1000 GPUs are in great demand right now. I've ordered one for a friend of mine about 2-3 weeks ago and so far it's still waiting to arrive at the store where I ordered it from.

this is 'biased' I guess I could say heavily towards evga, and another list is biased towards another, and another is biased towards another http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2922204/gpu-manufacturer-tier-list.html there is really no such thing as a 'best card manufacturer' its more like 'roll a dice and hope you don't get fucked over' so basically, just go with whatever you click on when you close your eyes [editline]29th June 2016[/editline] people are going to tug-of-war over which ones best but, who cares honestly someone might even reply with "No no, you're wrong, they're different because X" but fuck em. A cooler and some preset overclocking doesn't make it a different card. Don't worry about which one you get, just get which one sounds like it has the least screwed up warranty and has the least negative reviews complaining about them exploding.

When they're all pretty much even you want to get the one with the best warranty/CS.
"just get which one sounds like it has the least screwed up warranty "
In my experience it's EVGA with the best warranty.
afaik. EVGA is the only one that doesn't void warranty if you switch the cooler.
"just get which one sounds like it has the least screwed up warranty "
Well I can't read. [editline]29th June 2016[/editline]
afaik. I'm not sure how accurate this is as it was posted in 2011, also appears to be for the UK mainly. [t]http://i.imgur.com/wXdQS0M.png[/t]
at least post those benchmarks and the like to show that
http://media.bestofmicro.com/5/Y/468070/original/01a-3DMark-FireStrike-FullHD.png
The main difference between different brands cards are their aftermarket coolers and if/how much they are overclocked. And yeah, as said above some are gonna have better customer service etc. I'm really happy with my Zotac 980 Ti
EVGA has great coolers from my experience, and last time I was buying a GPU, their GTX970 FTW edition (at that time the highest factory overclock on the market) was cheaper than a regular version from any other manufacturer.
You can do any overclocking yourself though.
Yes but usually not without voiding your warranty, also some people don't know how / don't trust themselves to do it, plus how much you can overclock is going to depend on the cooler and other factors. It's more for a guaranteed overclock of x.

It's literally just bumping something up a couple numbers at a time and running a test until it crashes. Then go one number back to where it didn't crash.
So I guess the option for me would be the MSI. Its that or the Asus ROG, but they're the same price so...
So I guess the option for me would be the MSI. It already overclocks itself by default until it reaches the power/temperature target, if you want to go further you just move those sliders up and watch it go. And no, overclocking with GPU boost does not void warranty. There is a limit on how much extra voltage you can give it though, overclocking further via bios modifications probably will void warranty for most brands.

Just move the sliders.
My suggestion is the EVGA 1070 ACX3, regular (no FTW or whatever) because it's overclockable anyway (iirc) and you can swap out the coolers whenever. They really jump up in price (especially in Europe) when you bump up an edition. Also take a good peek at your rig before you decide shelling out €540 on a card that might be bottlenecked by your system.

I'd order the one you suggested, in fact I was planning to but http://eu.evga.com/Products/ProductList.aspx?type=0&family=GeForce+10+Series+Family&chipset=GTX+1070 Apparently it's not avaliable here in Europe yet. And I can't wait forever, it's gonna be a VR rig and my Rift is gonna be in my hands precisely... tomorrow.
