Jesus Christ, I remember Hayter was really killing himself during the recording for MGS4. I remember reading that in order to get the really gutteral sound of an ancient, chain smoking old man for Old Snake's voice he was downing shots of whiskey between each take. Then you have asshats like Troy Baker saying all that dumb shit about the original Silent Hill actors when he was doing the HD port.
I never heard anything about this, what did he say?
Konami was incomprehensibly inept and didn't bother getting the rights to the original VAs. Guy Cihi (James' original voice actor) wanted to negotiate a deal for residuals for the original VAs. Later due to fan support, Guy and the rest of the original VAs gave their rights to Konami without further payment. Troy Baker layed all the blame on Guy Cihi publicly even though it was Konami's fault that they hadn't obtained rights to the VAs in the first place. Calling Guy crazy and clearly not a proper VA since everyone knows residuals aren't a thing in voice acting. Cut to SAG several years later.
I never heard anything about this, what did he say?
Basically said VAs just have to suck it up and that such things as royalties and residuals don't belong in the industry.
Basically said VAs just have to suck it up and that such things as royalties and residuals don't belong in the industry.
Royalties for VA seems kinda ridiculous. Just pay a set sum and be done with it.
I think the best of both worlds is to have a lump sum and only get royalties after a certain set number of copies are sold, eg; being a huge hit like half life, deus ex, witcher, or mario 64. Having royalties on a game that can flop can cut into paying off losses.
didn't Hayter actually throw up at one point because the Old Snake voice was so taxing on his throat?
They talk about him throwing up in the article, he was pretending to throw up for a scene and after do many takes he eventually did onto the mic. They didn't say which game it was but since Snake does blow chunks in 4, I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
They didn't say which game it was but since Snake does blow chunks in 4, I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
If I recall, Old Snake vomits when his stress is too high.

A bonus of a day's salary (approx. $825) per 2m copies sold, up to a maximum of 8m (maximum bonus of $3,300).

Kiefer Sutherland was a fucking mistake in Mgs 5
I find it interesting that they claim it's mainly about the actors' safety, but when the game companies come back with an offer that gives them everything they want besides the royalties, they reject it. Almost as if it's all about the money...
Kiefer Sutherland was a fucking mistake in Mgs 5
I liked Kiefer but man, Hayter returning as Snake would make the game 10 times more enjoyable

In hindsight demanding royalties for each copy sold isn't going to be practical but whatever way you look at it, VAs need a better deal at least where AAA games are concerned.
Voice acting can make or break a game and good voice acting is more important than you'd imagine, I don't find it too outlandish to imagine that VAs should maybe get a little more respect in the industry
Except so can the art, programming, level design, game design... Why aren't the programmers, 3D artists, texture artists, level designers, game designers, QA testers, et al. entitled to royalties, exactly? [editline]25th November 2016[/editline] The amount of people who buy a game because of a particular voice actor are in the vast minority. Nobody cares about the specific voice actors, they care that the voice acting is quality. Just like you don't care who did the set design for a movie, you care that they did it well.
I liked Kiefer but man, Hayter returning as Snake would make the game 10 times more enjoyable
Only if he didn't ham it up and talk like THIS all the damn TIME. Theres a gigantic difference from what he used to sound like in mgs1 to every other game after, and that pisses me off.

People who are on the payroll =! what essentially counts as hired work. Besides, if you ask me, royalties should totally exist for these positions, if they were realistic to do.
I don't think contracted voice actors should be paid royalties IMO unless they're an employee [editline]26th November 2016[/editline] Also because it's not uncommon for the workers who often put in more work don't get royalties
How does that compare to the average TV actor?
Compared to actors in guest roles, I'd say it puts them more or less even since guest actors get residuals. For main cast TV actors, still behind.
Is this supposed to be for main characters or everyone? What if a game has a voice cast of hundreds?
Since there's no distinction in pay between a lead character and henchman#1 (unless you're a big name movie actor), it's for everyone. There was a good write-up breaking down the numbers and their impact on big budget games like GTAV compared to smaller ones like MGS3. I'll post it if I can find it. main character/tv actors are on a payroll, temporary voice acting jobs will be contractual.
Kiefer Sutherland was a fucking mistake in Mgs 5
It was actually cheaper to hire Sutherland for MGS5 because voice actors salaries increase every time they reprise a role
Kiefer Sutherland was a fucking mistake in Mgs 5
He was good but the main problem was that Kojima changed his character so much as never taking initiative in scenes. Big Boss barely talked which was a big disappointment since I loved listening to the thoughts of Raiden and Snake in the previous games. They felt more like characters in that world. With MGSV Big Boss was downgraded to (almost) Gordon Freeman levels as an identification figure for the player. The idea is ok but not in a series like MGS that lives a lot from expressed thoughts and emotions of their (main)characters.
