As the title says, this is my first non-prebuilt computer and before I order the parts I just want to make sure I have everything. I'm reusing my speakers, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. My chief concerns are:
Will it work
-Did I forget anything like thermal paste, or do I need to order anything like molex connectors or screws?
-I checked the mobo and it seems to be compatible with everything. Just want some verification
-I'm assuming the case is big enough...?
I only have a basic toolset with things like screwdrivers and wrenches. Will I need anything else?
Will it work well
-Opinions are welcome on all the parts
-Is the PSU too little, too much, or just right?
-Should I get a sound card? I have a 5-speaker setup and was wondering whether onboard audio would be enough. Just for gaming purposes, nothing professional like music-making.
Open to any criticisms or suggestions. I'm aware I'm somewhat underbudget, which isn't necessarily a bad thing; however, any upgrade suggestions (maybe a CPU cooler?) are welcome.
the total is $1100 and at top says $1200-$1500...
Monitor?
I'd suggest the ATI 5870 over Fermi.

You forgot an aftermarket heat sink. AMD makes decent heatsinks, but aftermarket coolers are always a better alternative. The case is large enough, and you won't need more than a screwdriver to get all of your parts in. Since it's mid-size, the only part that may be hard to fit in will be the graphics card.

Only improvements I could think of offering are to wait for Intel's Sandy Bridge and see what happens with cpu and motherboard prices. Also, stick with Nvidia and maybe SLI some GTX 460s over that single GTX 470. Also, the power supply is a little overkill, you don't need 850W for a single graphics card/single cpu setup. At most go with 650-700W for some amount of expansion/overhead.
Looks like you've done your homework. If you want to upgrade to SLI or a better GPU down the road that power supply is great, otherwise you can actually get one with a little less wattage. While the GTX 470 is a great card, it is very hot and noisy especially compared to some of the newer cards that have come out in the last few months. A slightly better case (like an Antec 900) would go a long way towards cooling that 470.
Thanks for the feedback, I changed the case to an Antec 900 and added a CPU cooler.

I recommend this case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112239&Tpk=lian%20li%20k62
This CPU cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185142&Tpk=scmg-2100
personally, I think you can do a lot better with your budget.
First of all, with a budget like that you can at least go for a 6950, the 970 is ridiculously overpriced, and add some combo deals in there to lower the price a bit.
Here, I gave it a go. My build is actually >$100 cheaper than yours.

Think of the eSATA brackets as free gifts, and before you go lol W7 professional there's a $30 discount, so it's actually cheaper than getting Home Premium and a hard drive separately.
I'm pretty sure the 212+ comes with thermal paste pre-applied, but I might be wrong, so throw in a tube if you want to.

Also with your budget it might be better to wait for Sandy Bridge
Went from 850W to 650W power supply, and switched 470GTX for 6950 after talking to a bunch of people.
EDIT:
Also using the Cooler Master instead of Zalman, and the W7/Spinpoint F3 combo. Thanks Jaehead
EDIT2:
And 970 for 955...
...and the PSU
really, get rid of the 970 and grab a 955 for $135
[editline]27th December 2010[/editline]
and get this PSU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371026&cm_re=antec_750w-_-17-371-026-_-Product
Trade that 970 for a 955 and overclock it.
-snip-
of course it will
I personally recommend the Zalman CNPS10x Performa over the Hyper 212+. It is slightly smaller and it provides better cooling (2-6 degrees C) and is $34, 5 bucks more.

And in case someone didn't say it already:
Wait for Sandy Bridge?
Built it over the last two days, works like a charm now. Thanks for the input
I'm glad it worked out for you! And I'm glad you opted to build.
