yeah by mass market they mean appealing to people who like bad games such as "STALKER"
You don't cash in on other markets with a game that doesn't really originate from that point.
Eg. RTS turned into FPS, horror game turned into FPS, platformer turned into FPS and so forth.
Carve your own market instead of trying to conform to the existing ones.
Pull a minecraft.
Mass-market appeal is such a boring thing. Why would you want to do what everyone else is doing?

If you think you think "mass appeal" == STALKER you must be borderline retarded.
The very phrase "mass market appeal" leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I hate it when a series loses its sense of identity just to appeal to a larger market. It seems to be happening to Dead Space too.

To make lots o' money of course.

Get out of here.

Are you high? I'll cut you.
Anyways, on-topic, I played the demo finally. The Leon campaign wasn't half bad, except that he aims like a handicapped child (may have been because I was using a PS3 controller, but the red-dot isn't 100% accurate anymore and can be improved with EXPERIENCE POINTS THAT THE ZOMBIES DROP. Not sure how to feel about that yet.), and everything was way too fucking dark to see what was going on. I didn't get much "horror" from it, but the actual shooting of zombies was fun (when I could actually hit their head) and I like how the inventory menu doesn't pause the game (Note: neither does the options menu...).
Then I proceeded to skip Chris' campaign, because I hate running around with an assault rifle that does shit for damage in Resident Evil, and went to play is that Jake guy. This campaign was much tougher, especially until I realized that he had multiple guns and figured out how his melee superpowers work.
The cover system is quite shitty and I didn't use it to pop out of cover and fire. Maybe it's more useful for Chris. But moving while aiming is actually rather cool, seeing as the characters can now sprint and do a bitchin' slide and switch to aiming, do flips and shit, and even duck an attack.
Even though they seemed to be handing me ammo and herbs like candy, I found myself running out of ammo because shitforbrains couldn't hit a head from 10 paces, and I never fully figured out the inventory system. There's a quick button to use healing items, but once I combined a Red and Green herb I never figured out how to use it. You can now combine green herbs to stack them and save inventory space, as opposed to getting a slightly better heal, and I've heard rumors of ammo crafting I think. I just wish somebody was smart enough to bring a flashlight so I can see if what I'm aiming at is actually a zombie, and whether or not its head is still attached.
TL;DR: "Mass-market appeal" doesn't necessarily mean "CASUAL AS FUCK", but it's definitely a different approach to the series. They probably wanted to do a bunch of different things with the series, and so they just did it all at once. In fact; it's actually pretty fun and challenging. That's not to say that the story won't be shit, but the gameplay seems to be solid enough (after some adjusting).

go ask someone if they know what STALKER is right now, and if they think its a good game
Franchises going down in a way like this makes my blood bloil.
Fucking casuals have to ruin everything.

Dunno if you've played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or not, but the only people who rave about how good of a game it is are people who are diehard PC gamers. The only concepts that relates Resident Evil and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is ammo conservation, and more recently, zombies that aren't afraid to fire guns at you and a non-pausing inventory (which is closer to Dead Space anyways). And S.T.A.L.K.E.R. zombies are slow, can take a lot of damage, but a shot to the head drops them.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is about scavenging, surviving, and upgrading your gear. It is not survival horror, it is a post-apocalyptic RPG with some horror elements to it. And yes, it is a great game if you're not a console kiddy that is afraid of dying a lot and being overwhelmed by a mouse and keyboard.

i just asked and he only knew it because it was on sale for $1
he said it was a great game
so in short
they want more money
end
I immensely enjoyed the demo.
Come at me.
The worst part of this approach is they're starting to take inspiration from those god awful movies. The plot is so bloody silly right now that I can't keep myself from busting out laughing at half the "scary" shit they try to pull.
I can't wait until the market for cover-based shooters crashes like platformer collectathons did way back when. You know it's going to happen.
You can make good games. You can make good games with plenty of mass appeal. I think this is a cop out.
So they try to make it appeal to as many people as possible by taking out all the stuff that made resident evil what it was and turning it into gears of war with zombies.
The worst part is this will probably sell a ton of copies.
So im guessing this is why they got rid of the way the camera was in RE 1 ,2 ,3. I much prefer looking around for keys.. Finding hints. Walking down a corridor then the camera changing and getting that "Holy shit" Moment when you nearly walk into a zombie.
Suddenly action movie matrix girl from the movies becomes cannon.
or did that already happen.
no see what i was implying is that everyone who likes STALKER is an idiot because its a really bad game series

Forgive me I had no idea you could speak for my opinion
Capcom, what happened to you?
You're just another company now that milks the shit out of their popular IPs (stupid crossover fighting games that hardly ever change, Street Fighter & Resident Evil) and throws away everything lesser.

I like how capcom is completely honest that they have gone off the deep end into corruption.
Now I just hope this game fails massively, just to prove a point to them.
