Hi, I'm hoping you guys can help me pick out a laptop from the ridiculous amount of options to choose from. I'm going to university this September and I need a laptop for school. I don't want some amazing gaming laptop because I already have a good desktop, but I would like it to be able to play basic lan games like CS:S, TF2, maybe Civ V and stuff like that. I want to keep the price below 1000$, and if possible have it closer to 700-800. This laptop has to last a while as well since I'm hopefully not going to be buying another one until I graduate. Here are some specific things I'm looking for:
-a numpad
-discrete graphics, not integrated intel shit
-sexy and well-built
-reliable
-decent battery life
-good for note-taking (tablet?)
I've already been looking for a while but it's really hard to choose a single laptop out of the many hundreds out there. Also, I'm probably going to be buying it before March unless there's some super-epic CES laptop I should wait for. Thanks for reading.
Edit:sorry forgot to mention I'm in Canada.
Wow are you serious is there really no such thing because I'm looking for the exact same thing.
Is there really nobody with a suggestion?
go for the dv7se or dv8t both from hp
ul80-vt
silver edition is cooler
Wait for more AMD fusion laptops to roll out.
The hp dm1z is amazing for what it is and just performs like no other in it's price class ($450 ish) but it's still rather low end. Still the fusion thing is very promising.

Seriously though if you want something now the dm1z is rather amazing, it outperforms laptops that cost $200+ more.

I believe it launches officially tomorrow (jan 24) so should be available within a few weeks.
I was also looking at the HP Pavilion DV6 or DV7, because they seem to have pretty good specs and a really nice appearance. Does anyone know anything about these?
And I think I'm gonna aim a bit higher than the dm1z, but not that much higher.

Yeah my cousin got the dv7. It looks really nice and it works great but there were two minus points to his laptop.
-It is to big to fit in his backpack
-because he got the laptop totally upgraded with factory over-clocks on everything, it starts to overheat a lot
To fix these problems I recommend you buy the dv6 or the dv5 and not jack them up a lot. but if you want to upgrade it all the way, then I suggest getting a lap cooling mat.
