How is it not a sport!?
Most of the people that have this mind-set are those that think that because esports are on a PC, it means that it's easier than things like football, and if it's easy to be good at it's clearly not a real competitive sport.
Let me tell you, being a professional at CS/DOTA 2/LoL is not easy, it is very difficult and very strenuous.
They are games whereby you compete with a team or by yourself at a game for money and entertainment.
Football is a game where you compete with a team for money and entertainment.
The only real difference between these two examples is that one is mentally strenuous and one is more physically strenuous, so doesn't that make 'real' sports easier than esports because your average potato can do it? Whereas with esports you have to have a degree of intelligence to be able to be good no matter what.
You could have the best aim in CS in the whole world, there's no way you could be professional without being smart.
People relate esports to computers, and people in the sports industry seem to have that 90s thought of "people that play on computers are fat nerds and fat nerds can't be athletes", but I think that it is not the physical appearance of an athlete that matters, it is their physical contribution and ability to do said sport/esport, people are too quick to dismiss new things like esports.
But that's just my opinion so whatever
eSport isn't Sport.
eSport is eSport.
It's alright sir, I'm not interested in EPSN if it isn't including eSports.
He's right, it is a competition, not a sport
um, sports are a competition with a different name.
If he doesn't want to cover it because of lack of public interest or controversial nature that is his decision and it is totally ok.
But saying that it isn't sport is kinda dumb. Over here we have sports like 'who can roll cheese downhill the farthest' but it gets no coverage because only few are actually interested in it, and that's ok.
Meanwhile, there is 'who can joust a mannequin and hit it for the most points' that gets some coverage since it has plenty of followers. Is the former less of a sport than the latter? I don't think so.

the definition of the word sport contains "physical exertion"
The more video games are associated with sports, the more dumbass dudebros we get.
Video games shouldn't be considered sports. Video games are the opposite of sports, and should stay that way.
He's just going to lose out on coverage to something like Fox Sports. Someone is going to pick up eSports and make a significant amount of money on the viewer spike.

and your point is? chess is a sport. the definition is practically invalidated by a game that requires nothing but internal thought and strategy.
The amount of exertion that a really big game of League or Dota requires is surprising. All that adrenaline and extreme concentration can take it out of you.
Their loss, someone else will pick it up.
He's right though. It doesn't become a sport until it can be exploited by a corrupt organization like FIFA, and help cover up massive government embezzlement like the Sochi Olympics.
Well he's not wrong, but in terms of spectating it's the same thing basically.
And I can see why he wouldn't want to show it on television
playing video games on a professional level is actually pretty tough. sitting still and trying to stay fully focused on everything happening in a game like Star craft or dota for several hours is extremely tiring both physically and also psychologically.
Sport is a activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
The International 2013 had a Prize Pool of $2,874,380 Dollars.
The International 2014 had a Prize Pool of $15,247,068 Dollars.
Its a Sport.
It really is a shame, they are missing out.
As for those who say it isn't exerting, try and play 6 games of Dota 2 in a row and tell me how you feel.

It isn't a sport because you can't roid through it :v:

It's okay to not want to show it on TV
But to completely dismiss it as a sport is just stupid. Because now other people will believe this and esports will keep being crippled

But you don't do any running so it's not a sport :(

You don't do any running in a game of snooker but its still sports.
The Archers at the Olympics stand still and all they do is move a arm but it is still sports.
Who even dictates what is a sport and what is not?

People always attribute the word "sports" with a physical activity that requires strength, endurance or precision. This will always be the case.
I think Esports is a pretty bad chosen name though, I associate it more with a competition than an actual sport.

Actual "book" intelligence =/= Sport Intelligence. Athlete's train for hours a day learning how the opposition plays, they adjust their playbooks for the upcoming game, they're constantly aware of the best play to make while in a high pressure situation.
Both actual athletes and esports athletes will probably both have the same level of intelligence towards their chosen sport.
An average potato could have the physical ability to play but if they're not smart they would be a hindrance to their team.
PS. NFL players score above average on Intelligence tests.

You could be the most physically gifted athlete in the world, but there's no way you could play at a professional level without being smart.

Why is anybody rating this disagree?
Every game involves strategy. Doing the same plays over and over again will not win you anything. Teams without strategy get nowhere.
Doesn't ESPN have stuff like chess and poker tournaments sometimes?
Is there not a bias to debate weather it is or is not a sport on a forum oriented towards gamers and people who endorse said gaming competitions?
Is there not a bias to debate weather it is or is not a sport on a forum oriented towards gamers and people who endorse said gaming competitions?
No more biased in saying so than ESPN is saying anything about about "real" sports.
idk why this is even a debate when you can just slamdunk any argument by mentioning chess
idk why this is even a debate when you can just slamdunk any argument by mentioning chess
Just don't tell the ESPN president that, he would likely remove chess from the channel.
The fact that, to this guy, Poker and spelling bees are sports when videogames aren't is just baffling to me.

That's the most ignorant reasoning ever.
