I want to play silent hill 4 again and I have this spanish patch. Now I know grammar but my vocabulary is horribly limited so I was wondering that if I would play the game and find out any words that I don't know in spanish will it really help me learn more in spanish or is it just going to be a waste of my time? I mean the game has a shit ton of text to read to understand the story and such and I have the patience to translate the words that I don't know because I love the way that silent hill 4 shows the story through text you find.
meh, I played Dungeon Siege on german for a long long time before I got the english version, I learnt a bit of german from it.
But the game wasnt so dependant on text, but if you're patient enough to translate stuff, might be worth
Silent hill is one of those games where if you don't read what you find you don't understand much and end up just solving puzzles and killing shit without being aware of what the hell is going on so I thought that it would be a great way to improve my spanish through reading shit in the game
I know a Danish girl who decided to supplement her knowledge of the English language by playing video games, and an American one who did the same for the Japanese language. It's not something I've done myself, but it obviously seemed to work for those two.
I think any immersion in the language is going to help, it would certainly depend on the quality of the translations though. If it was fan made, it may be a little shaky.
It's from the official game from what I have gathered. Studying the usual vocabulary can get boring but when you want to understand what is going on you will memorize the vocabulary if you know what I am saying.
I learned English through playing Pokemon, so I'd say go for it
It's a good idea. I think you'd pick up a better handle of some of the words that repeat a lot. If you're really interested in learning a language, I recommend watching your favorite children's cartoons in another language.
Simple(er) language, songs, meaningful vocabulary (in a game a lot of the words will just be related to guns or enemies, which isn't too common in the world), and you remember the gist of what's going on from watching it earlier in your primary language. Have fun learning!

Oh and you can rewind movies to rewatch dialog that went to fast, which isn't possible in a game.
Thanks man. I picked silent hill thanks to it's more sophisticated writing(compared to other games) and the plethora of words that exist through out the game if you actually check out the texts. For example there are victims of sacraments in the game and every person has his own story and his own place of death and such. You see in spanish most of the hard words which relate with science or literature mostly come from english, latin and greek words which are really easy to memorize. My problem lies in the everyday vocabulary of the simpliest words and verbs. I could get a nicely written literature based text in spanish but it would be really hard for me to write down a text with everyday activities.
I got started learning English through Pokemon Silver when I was a kid.
When the lessons started in the third grade, I already knew quite a bit.
I never had to study for any test, and I nailed them all, so that was awesome.

This happened to me too. Though I started learning from NES Final Fantasies. I think I actually had to study english during the last semester of high school. Before that, it was all super-easy to me and I already knew the things that were taught to us.

Pretty much the same here, I started off at a very young age learning English simply by the games I played, none of them were on Danish. Being a gamer for this long, it was paid off quite well, this year in school I havnt gotten anything but A+ in anything in English :v:
Related to topic; I did it with a german game, as I said before, and it is do-able, if you put some time into it. You should try it out, atleast, see if it is something you'd benefit from.
This is by far the stupidest thread I have ever seen, therefore, you can all burn in hell:suicide:

That's rude mate. Anyway I will start silent hill today and I hope that this will pay off
I learned my English through Jersey shore
I learned a lot of my English from Zelda: OoT when I was a kid
I've been playing through Zelda: Minish Cap in French. There's most certainly going to end up being words you don't know, but you can usually figure them out by context (assuming you know the other words). It's a really good experience, I think.
