Okay, so they want it, but its costly?
I guess that makes sense.
Where does the "you think you want it, but you don't" dickbag dude fit in with this?

He doesn't, hes just a dickhead who attempted PR suicide
Why don't they just grab Mangos or any other emulator and take the content? Oh, nevermind, they are redoing it I think. Much better. New models in TBC I hope :)

They stated that the hacked servers use a lot of trial and error for content generation. Nostalrius itself is the product of years of trial and error.
That method doesn't translate well to an actual licensed product and certainly wouldn't live up to Blizzard's QA standards.
Sounds like damned if you do damned if you don't nonsense, would it really be so bad if they just licensed it out to them? I think frankly they lost more reputation from this whole ordeal than they would if they put their name on it and it wasn't the most stable quality.
Then again perhaps that would open the flood gates to people and the more idiotic ones would find it low quality and damn blizzard for it.

Blizzard won't be willing to run the game on a server emulator like Nos did. They will only want to do it if they can use their actual server software, which they said they had parts of, but not all of it.
"In order to generate the server (and the client), a complex build system is being used. It is not just about generating the “WoW.exe” and “Server.exe” files. The build process takes data, models, maps, etc. created by Blizzard and also generates client and server specific files. The client only has the information it needs and the server only has the information that it needs.
"This means that before re-launching vanilla realms, all of the data needed for the build processes has to be gathered in one place with the code. Not all of this information was under a version control system. In the end, whichever of these parts were lost at any point, they will have to be recreated: this is likely to take a lot of resources through a long development process."
This sounds like the ideal thing to crowdfund. They have a 100% guarantee they can deliver if they get the required resources, they should be able to make very good estimates as to how much money and time they need, and it's a project that appeals to a very specific niche of gamers.

Why not hire the Nostalrius team and propose them to "fix" the content?
Crowdfund the resources necessary, if people want it then they'll pay for it. If not then the population never really gave a shit.

Because while Nostalrius was nice there is more than likely to be more skilled people within the bliz team to handle it.
It seems incredibly stupid of blizzard to not backup all the files required for a complete build for major patches.

They had basically to create most of their tools and standards. I'd wager they only started using versioning from LK onwards.
