Uh... Why not just go back too electric street cars?
Seriously, I cannot understand for the life of me why cities and towns do not invest into electric street cars that run 24/7, and have systems in place where upon entering, people just select which station they'd like to goto, and the stations with the most votes in the next on the route, unless of course the second highest pick is closer. :v:
Doing this would not only lessen the need for a car, but it could also allow people to use apps on their cellphones/tablets/laptops to call for pickups at certain pickup/dropoff areas. The economic benefits would be astronomical as not only would it create a safe method of travel around the city, but it would lessen the need to constantly repair infrastructure once you balance out the amount of cars going off the road in favor of simply just calling a bus. Another great thing would be that said streetcars would be able to act as transport of those with health disabilities, older people, and otherwise.
We have something similar here in Bismarck-Mandan, North Dakota. It's called Bisman Transit, and it picks up those which would otherwise be unable to get around without it. The only problem is you need to call 24 hours in advance to use BisMan Transit. Take out the bus driver, and automate the system, and you have something which someone would be able to use 24/7, and be able to schedule a ride within thirty minutes.
