I've had my current CPU for quite some time now and it's starting to show it's age. So I want to upgrade to a new one, but I can't decide if I want a Quad or Dual Core.
My current specs:
Core2Duo E6400 (2.13Ghz)
Geforce 8800GTS 512
4GB DDR2 800MHz RAM
ASUS P5B SE
I use this PC for development, gaming, emulation (PS2, Wii/Gamecube), downloading, internet surfing and sometimes I convert videos for my PSP.
I'm from Austria, but I can find good Austrian online shops myself. So a link to Newegg is ok too.
At the moment I'm considering a E8400 for 150€ or a Q9550 for 200€.
Edit:
I'm not overclocking.
Q9550.
Is it worth the 50€ extra?
For future-proofing and such, yes.
But single/dual core games/applications run slower on it and that's still the majority.
Yo man, it's a quad core. It's like 4x as powerful. If you get the Q9550, you get almost 1000 MEGAHURTZ OF PROCESSAN POWA!

:downs:
What games/applications do you use most frequently?
some games will only use some of the cores. like tf2 you have to tell it to uses all the cores. i like mine works fasts no problems
Well, Source games run fine on my current processor, so they don't matter at all.
I know that GTA IV will run much better on the Q9550 than on any dual core, but I can play it on my PS3 too.
Application wise the only thing that's not fast enough (in my opinion) on my current CPU is video conversion. I think that would profit most from a Quad core.
Game wise I don't know what I'll be playing for the next 1-2 years. Mostly ego shooters though.
Well, in the next year or two, quads will really come into their own.
Get an Intel E8400 Wolfdale.
It doesn't help at all if you don't tell me why.
I would get the E8400. I have heard nothing but good things about it.
As the proud owner of a Q9550, I can tell you that buying one would be a great move. In the next few months, more and more games will come out that use quad-cores effectively, and you can easily clock the Q9550 up to past 3.5GHz.

I agree with this man.
besides, you never know if you're going to use any program that's cpu heavy.
I think I'll order the Q9550 on Monday if nobody posts any good reasons why I shouldn't.
Why has nobody suggested another quad core yet? Is this the best value I can get?
Oh, and what's the difference between C1 and E0?
GTA IV - uses quad cores well.
ArmA II - uses quad cores well.
I'd bet :10bux: that at least 5 more A-list games this year will take advantage of quads.

because it's actually a good idea if you plan to use your computer for some time before upgrading again

because it's the best Intel Quadcore

Nothing that matters except if you overclock.
Not the best Intel quad, but the best price:performance LGA 775 quad.
Okay, thanks guys.
